The sequel to the early 2000s fan-favorite film finally has a release date for streaming. Freakier Friday debuted in August, more than twenty years after the original movie came out in 2003.
Great news for fans! Disney+ has announced that Freakier Friday will be available to stream starting November 12th. That’s just a few weeks away! The movie was first released in theaters over three months ago, and now you can enjoy it at home.
Continuing the story begun in the original Freak Friday, Freakier Friday reunited Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as Tess and Anna Coleman. This sequel, based on Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel (and the third movie made from the book), also features Julia Butters as Anna’s daughter, Harper, and Sophia Hammons as her future stepdaughter, Lily, both of whom get caught up in the body-swapping fun. The main cast is completed by Manny Jacinto, Mark Harmon, Haley Hudson, Christina Vidal Mitchell, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan.
Released on August 8th, Freakier Friday was well-received by both critics and audiences. As of this writing, the film has a 74% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 224 reviews from verified critics. Audiences loved it even more, giving it a 91% score on the site, based on over 2,500 reviews. This strong positive response led to significant box office success, with the film earning over $153 million despite having a production budget of around $45 million.
I always found it interesting how differently people reacted to the original Freaky Friday versus the sequel. Audiences really loved the newer version – it scored a 91% with them! But surprisingly, critics were much more enthusiastic about the 2003 Freaky Friday, giving it a fantastic 88% rating, compared to the 74% the sequel received. It just goes to show how tastes can differ!
Why Freakier Friday Took So Long to Make
Jamie Lee Curtis explained she was often asked about a possible sequel to Freaky Friday, and she discussed both what finally convinced her to reprise her role as Tess Coleman and why it took over twenty years to make the film happen. She mentioned, ‘I’ve always been asked if there will be a Freaky Friday sequel,’ when she first announced the project.
During my travels around the world in 2022 promoting Halloween Ends, I was constantly asked about Jamie Lee Curtis’s daughter, Lindsay. The explanation I gave was that Lindsay needed to be old enough to have a teenage child of her own. Shortly after that, Lindsay had a baby and came to visit me with her. That’s when we began discussing a potential project seriously.
Freakier Friday will be available for streaming on Disney+ beginning on Nov. 12.
