James Van Der Beek, known for his role in Dawson’s Creek, is auctioning off items from the show to help cover the costs of his treatment for Stage 3 colorectal cancer.
The 48-year-old actor, best known for his role in Dawson’s Creek, recently told People magazine that he’s been holding onto these special items for years, waiting for the perfect moment to share them. With everything that’s been happening lately, he feels that moment has finally arrived.
The popular teen show, which aired from 1998 to 2003, featured Van Der Beek as Dawson Leery. The main cast also included Katie Holmes as Joey Potter, Joshua Jackson as Pacey Witter, Michelle Williams as Jen Lindley, and Mary Beth Peil as Grams. Fans can bid on items from the show, like outfits – including the one Dawson wore in the first episode – along with props and set decorations. The auction will be held live in London on December 6th, and online bidding will begin on December 7th.
All the money earned from selling the commemorative items will go to James Van Der Beek to help cover the costs of his cancer treatment. He and his wife, Kimberly, have six children: Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn, and Jeremiah.
Although it’s a little bittersweet letting these items go, I’m happy to be able to share them with my fans through Propstore’s auction as a way of saying thank you for all their support.
How James Van Der Beek’s Kids Have Handled His Cancer Battle

CW
In November 2024, James Van Der Beek revealed he had been privately battling colorectal cancer, sharing that his family had been a huge support system. Eight months later, on the Today show, he described dealing with cancer as a “full-time job,” admitting the diagnosis brought many challenges and uncertainties. Despite this, he and his wife made the decision not to shield their children from what he was going through.
I’m no expert, but we simply tried to be as honest as we could, tailoring our explanations to what they could understand. They already had a good idea of what was going on, so we didn’t need to overcomplicate things, he said.
Van Der Beek explained that his children are very perceptive and can tell when he’s struggling. He felt that keeping something so significant from them would only make things more confusing.
Sharing your goals and how you plan to achieve them helps others understand and connect with what you’re going through. Remember, your challenges and successes become shared experiences, and you shouldn’t prevent loved ones from offering their support. It’s been incredibly heartwarming to see – even my kids are stepping up to help, like making me tea and asking what I need. There’s been a lot of good that’s come from being open and honest.
