James McAvoy’s 3-Part Fantasy Series Atoned For A Mistake Made 12 Years Earlier

James McAvoy leads a fantastic three-season fantasy series on HBO Max. It’s not only a great show within the fantasy genre, but it also successfully redeemed a previous decision the network made twelve years earlier. While HBO doesn’t have as many fantasy shows as some streaming services like Netflix, the ones they do offer are known for their high quality.

As a fantasy fan, I always felt like His Dark Materials got a little lost in the shadow of Game of Thrones, which is a real shame. It’s a fantastic three-season show based on Philip Pullman’s incredible novels from the ’90s. James McAvoy is brilliant as Lord Asriel, and the whole cast is just top-notch – seriously talented people all around.

HBO’s series, His Dark Materials, tells the story of Lyra (Dafne Keen), a young girl caught up in a world-altering mystery. The story takes place in a unique, alternate universe. While it was previously adapted as the 2007 film The Golden Compass, that version wasn’t well-received, and the series might have ended there if HBO hadn’t created a successful new adaptation.

Why HBO’s His Dark Materials TV Show Easily Surpassed 2007’s The Golden Compass

HBO’s His Dark Materials was a much bigger success than the film The Golden Compass, likely because the show itself is well-made, but also because the movie had significant weaknesses. The Golden Compass was released after a wave of popular fantasy adaptations – The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and The Chronicles of Narnia – and didn’t quite measure up.

While other movies successfully adapted their books, The Golden Compass seemed to miss the point of the original story, relying heavily on its special effects to attract viewers. The result is a visually impressive but ultimately shallow film that lacks the depth and impact of the books. It feels hurried, unsure of itself, and empty in places where the story should have been strong.

His Dark Materials Has One Of The Best Fantasy TV Casts Since Game Of Thrones

The series His Dark Materials boasts a fantastic cast, comparable in quality to Game of Thrones. James McAvoy delivers a particularly strong performance, but he’s just one of many talented actors – both leads and guest stars – who bring the show to life.

His Dark Materials Cast
Actor Character
James McAvoy Lord Asriel Belacqua
Dafne Keen Lyra Belacqua
Clarke Peters The Master of Jordan College
James Cosmo Farder Coram van Texel
Georgina Campbell Adele Starminster
Lin-Manuel Miranda Lee Scoresby
Andrew Scott Colonel John Parry
Terence Stamp Giacomo Paradisi
Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje Ogunwe
Phoebe Waller-Bridge (voice) Sayan Kötör
Helen McCrory (voice) Stelmaria
Peter Serafinowicz (voice) Iofur Raknison

The series boasts a fantastic cast, including Clarke Peters, James Cosmo, Georgina Campbell, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Andrew Scott, Terence Stamp, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. It also features impressive voice actors like Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Helen McCrory, and Peter Serafinowicz.

His Dark Materials Quietly Beat Other Fantasy TV Adaptations

Even though His Dark Materials has a strong 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a good conclusion, it hasn’t reached the same level of popularity as shows like The Rings of Power and The Witcher. It’s a more subtle and understated series, but many would argue it’s actually better than a lot of other highly-praised fantasy shows.

His Dark Materials is a beautifully crafted series that feels magical like the original books, but also thoughtfully questions organized religion. It consistently improves with each season, drawing viewers further into its unique and fascinating world.
