James Gunn’s DCU Will Face 1 Major Obstacle For At Least A Year Following WBD Paramount Merger

DC Studios, led by co-CEO James Gunn, and its parent company Warner Bros. are expected to face significant limitations over the next year because of the upcoming merger with Paramount. Following a competitive bidding process, Warner Bros. Discovery will be acquired by Paramount Skydance, led by CEO David Ellison, in a deal estimated to be worth around $111 billion.

As a huge movie fan, I’ve been following the news about the Warner Bros. Discovery sale, and honestly, most of the buzz centers around what this means for DC Studios and James Gunn’s vision for the DC Universe. So far, it sounds like Gunn and the creative team will stay on board, but let’s be real – mergers are unpredictable. A lot can happen in the next year while everything gets finalized, so nothing is set in stone.

Over the next year, DC Studios will finish making Supergirl (releasing in June), Clayface (October), and the Lanterns series for HBO Max. They’re also preparing to start filming new projects for the following year, including Man of Tomorrow and The Batman: Part 2. A true crime show starring Jimmy Olsen and Gorilla Grodd is also being considered.

As a movie critic, I’m starting to see the ripple effects of Warner Bros.’ potential sale. Variety is reporting that things are already shifting within the company, and that definitely includes DC Studios. The big takeaway? Don’t expect any major changes overnight. Sources are telling them it’ll likely be at least a year before all the government approvals go through, meaning business as usual – or at least, the current uncertainty – is here to stay for a while.

According to a leaked recording reported by Business Insider, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav indicated that getting approval from regulators in the U.S. and other countries could take between 6 and 18 more months to complete the deal. He even suggested the deal might not happen at all, in which case Warner Bros. Discovery would receive a $7 billion payment from Paramount as a result of the agreed-upon terms.

The report also explained how Warner Bros.’ studios, including DC Studios, might be affected. It suggested the studio could face difficulties with major deals and long-term planning until Paramount officially takes over, which isn’t expected for more than a year.

Filmmakers are finding it difficult to get updates from studio leaders about their projects because of the sale. The studio is also hesitant to invest heavily in new movies until the new owners take over and decide what they want to do, which will significantly affect James Gunn’s plans for the DC Universe during this transition.

What Warner Bros.’ Sale Means for DC Studios In the Short Term

DC Studios has a few projects nearing completion and scheduled for release this year, including Supergirl, Lanterns, and Clayface. James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow and Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part 2 are both in the early stages of production, with filming expected to begin soon, and are currently slated for release next year, meaning they shouldn’t be affected by recent changes.

We don’t yet know which live-action movies DC Studios will be making in 2028, and it’s possible Paramount will own the studio by the time filming begins in early 2027. Beyond the series Lanterns, there’s been little development on new live-action TV shows, and production would need to start soon to meet a 2027 release schedule.

The recent budget cuts might stop Gunn from approving ambitious, risky projects. This could mean less live-action DC Universe content for a while, which would likely upset fans and the leaders at DC Studios – including Gunn himself.

Although Paramount seems keen on keeping the director of Superman involved with DC, it’s possible he doesn’t fully agree with the new management. There’s been talk that James Gunn might leave his role after Man of Tomorrow when his contract ends in Spring 2027, but this remains uncertain.
