James Gunn’s new Batman-related movie, focusing on the character Clayface, has added six major actors to its cast. Though Gunn is still developing his overall vision for Batman, this new film is an early step in building out the world of Gotham. The movie, simply titled Clayface, is scheduled to be released on September 11th.
I was surprised to hear that the Batman spin-off is now officially slated as the third movie in James Gunn’s DCU plan! Originally, it wasn’t part of the initial ten-year roadmap, but now it’s happening after Superman in 2025 and Supergirl in 2026. What’s really exciting is that James Watkins is directing, and Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini are writing it. Plus, they’re promising a fantastic cast to bring Clayface’s story to life on the big screen for the very first time – I can’t wait to see how that turns out!
Every Main Actor in James Gunn’s Batman Spin-Off Movie (Clayface)
Tom Rhys Harries

Tom Rhys Harries, a British actor, has been cast as Clayface in the new DC Universe. Before this role, he was recognized for his performances in the series White Lines, The Gentlemen, and Suspicion.
Clayface is one of Batman’s most tragic villains. He became a criminal after actor Matt Hagan was severely disfigured during a fight with a criminal. Hagan then experimented with a strange chemical, which gave him the power to transform his body into any shape he desired.
Naomi Ackie

Naomi Ackie is joining the cast of Clayface, where she will play Dr. Caitlin Bates. Ackie has a growing list of credits, including roles in Mickey 17, Lady Macbeth, and Blink Twice. She’s also known for her work in the Star Wars universe, having appeared as Jannah in Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.
Dr. Bates is a brand new character introduced with the Clayface storyline. Because she doesn’t have a history in the comics, audiences don’t have any prior knowledge about her role in the DC Universe. Reports suggest she’ll be a key romantic interest for Matt Hagen and that she leads a cutting-edge biotech company focused on innovative medical research.
Max Minghella

The cast of the upcoming Clayface series will feature Max Minghella as Detective John, a character shrouded in mystery. Minghella is known for his roles in projects like Spiral, Babylon, The Social Network, and The Handmaid’s Tale, which concluded in 2025.
I’m really intrigued by this new character, Detective John, they’ve created for the Clayface movie. Apparently, he’s Dr. Bates’s fiancé, and as the story unfolds, he starts to get suspicious about her connection with Matt Hagen. What’s exciting is that this could give us a fresh look inside the Gotham Police Department – it’s always a key part of any good Batman tale, and I’m curious to see how they’ll portray it through his eyes.
Eddie Marsan

Although it’s not officially confirmed, many believe Eddie Marsan will play a manager connected to the character Matt Hagen, potentially as Clayface. Marsan is known for his roles in films like The World’s End, 21 Grams, and Happy-Go-Lucky.
If the reports are accurate, Marsan will play a significant supporting role alongside Hagen, especially during the actor’s most dramatic character arc. Photos from the set show Marsan giving a press conference outside a hospital, which suggests this could be his character’s pivotal storyline in the film.
Emily Florence

I’m so excited to hear that Emily Florence is joining the cast of the new DC Studios film, Clayface! While we don’t know what character she’ll be playing yet, it’s a huge step for her. She’s been incredibly talented on stage, performing in London’s West End since 2013, and she’s currently filming A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder for the BBC. Clayface will be her big break into major movies, and I can’t wait to see her shine!
Wil Coban

Wil Coban, a veteran actor known for background work, is stepping into a major role as the enigmatic character Bones in the upcoming film, Clayface. He’s previously appeared in projects like The Boys in the Boat, The Sandman, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and will also have a small part in the 2026 Supergirl movie.
James Gunn’s DC Universe will continue with “Clayface,” the third film and the first to focus on a villain. Starring Tom Rhys Harries, the movie will tell the story of Matt Hagen, an actor who faces hardship before an accident turns him into the shapeshifting villain Clayface, a well-known enemy of Batman.
