James Gunn Reveals DCU Batman Movie’s 2026 Production Status

James Gunn recently gave fans an update on the DCU’s Batman movie. Called The Brave and the Bold, the film will officially introduce Batman into the new DC Universe. Although some other DC projects have moved forward more quickly, Gunn has confirmed that The Brave and the Bold is still in development.

The most recent update on the DCU Batman movie indicated that the script was still being written, and Andy Muschietti, director of The Flash, was confirmed to direct. There hasn’t been much news since then – until now, potentially.

So, there was this report going around about Brave and the Bold, and it really took off online! It got everyone talking about the Batman movie and when it might come out. Well, James Gunn, who’s running DC Studios, jumped on Threads to set the record straight. He wanted to address all the rumors about a finished script and a possible 2028 release date, which were getting a lot of attention.

James Gunn responded to a fan asking about the project’s status and recent rumors by saying the rumors were false and the screenplay was still being written.

The most recent public update regarding the film from the director of Superman was in June. At that time, Gunn mentioned he was collaborating with a writer on The Batman and that this project, along with another, were DC Studios’ main focuses (according to Rolling Stone).

Currently, my biggest focus at DC is making sure Batman is handled well. I’m not writing the Batman comic myself, but I’m collaborating closely with the Batman writer to ensure everything feels right. He, and Wonder Woman, are both incredibly important characters for DC. Besides the projects I’m already working on, our main priorities are completing the scripts for both ‘Wonder Woman’ and ‘Batman’.

From what’s been shared publicly, work on the project is still happening, and James Gunn will announce updates when it’s ready for release.

One of the first projects announced by the new DC Studios is a film called The Brave and the Bold. It will feature an older version of Batman teaming up with his son, Damian Wayne, to defend Gotham City from villains with superpowers. The writer of the movie hasn’t been announced yet.

When Will We Hear About the DCU Batman Movie? 

Fans have been eagerly awaiting the DCU’s Batman movie for quite some time. Although The Brave and the Bold was among the first projects announced for the new film universe, it’s still quite a ways off from being released.

Things are looking up for the DC Universe. Following the positive reception to James Gunn’s Superman film, DCU has proven it’s here to stay. Now, Gunn and the team at DC Studios are focusing on building out other key characters from DC Comics into a connected universe. This includes projects for Green Lantern (with a series planned for later this year), Wonder Woman (whose movie is being developed quickly), and Batman.

In July, James Gunn shared that he was prioritizing three DC superhero movies: a sequel to Superman, a new Wonder Woman film, and The Brave and the Bold.

Now that there’s a renewed focus on making a Batman movie, fans might soon hear more news about it. The main hurdle is finalizing a script that James Gunn approves for DC Studios.
