I was so excited when James Gunn revealed plans for the next big superhero saga! It’s amazing how the MCU pioneered this idea of larger, connected storylines – breaking things up into eras instead of just individual movies. It really changed the game for comic book films, and I can’t wait to see what he has planned.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been divided into two large story arcs: the Infinity Saga and the Multiverse Saga. James Gunn’s new DC Universe (DCU) is organizing its stories into Chapters, starting with “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.” However, this doesn’t mean DCU will abandon the idea of larger sagas altogether; in fact, they’re still planned.
Now that James Gunn has announced a sequel to his *Superman* film (and production is reportedly starting soon), the co-CEO of DC Studios has shared details about his overall vision for a series of *Superman* movies. Gunn discussed his plans – now known as the *Superman* Saga – while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere of *Peacemaker* Season 2.
DC Studios’ head recently announced he’s completed the script for the next installment in what he’s calling the ‘Superman Saga.’ This will be the next project for DC’s new cinematic universe, building on the positive reception of this summer’s *Superman* reboot.
I’ve completed the detailed outline for the next installment in the Superman story arc. I’m currently developing it and hope to begin production soon.
This is the second new story DC Studios has revealed since James Gunn and Peter Safran became co-CEOs, and it’s the first one planned specifically for the main DC Universe.
James Gunn’s vision for the new DC Universe continues with the second season of *Peacemaker*, premiering on HBO Max on August 21st. Several projects are already planned for this interconnected universe, including *Supergirl*, *Lanterns*, and Gunn’s upcoming *Superman* sequel – which is rumored to focus on the entire Super-family. These initial projects will make up the first chapter of the DCU, called ‘Gods and Monsters,’ and are designed to mirror the phased approach of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Every Superhero Movie Saga To Date (Including the New Superman Saga)
Infinity Saga
The Infinity Saga was the story that shaped the first decade of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it set a new standard for superhero movie series. It began with the original Iron Man in 2008 and culminated in the massive showdown against Thanos in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
The Infinity Saga covers the first 23 Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films. It began with the introductions of popular heroes like Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor, and followed their journey as they assembled into the Avengers. The saga includes major events like a conflict that divided the Avengers, and the devastating Infinity War, where Thanos wiped out half of all life in the universe.
Multiverse Saga
The Multiverse Saga is the current major storyline in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It began after the events of *Avengers: Endgame* and so far includes 15 movies, 15 series on Disney+, and two special presentations.
The Multiverse Saga opened up the world of the Marvel Multiverse, letting heroes and villains travel between different realities and experience some of Marvel’s most compelling stories. This is all building towards a major two-part Avengers event: *Avengers: Doomsday* in 2026 and *Secret Wars* in 2027. These films will be based on the famous *Secret Wars* comic book storyline.
The Batman Epic Crime Saga
The Batman is the first story arc announced under the new leadership of DC Studios, headed by James Gunn and Peter Safran. This franchise, directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson as a young, brooding Batman, currently exists separately from the main DC Universe.
Although Robert Pattinson’s Batman world currently includes just one movie and one TV show, more content is on the way. The script for *The Batman – Part II* has been completed, and a second season of the popular *Penguin* series on HBO is being considered, along with other potential spin-off shows.
Superman Saga
Next, we have the first official large-scale story within the new DC Universe, James Gunn’s *Superman* Saga. It appears Gunn, who is leading DC Studios and directing *Superman*, is using the term “Saga” to refer to ongoing series of films or shows within the DC Universe that he oversees.
It’s still uncertain if the ‘Superman Saga’ will include only movies titled ‘Superman,’ or if it will also encompass other projects like the upcoming ‘Supergirl’ film. Given that the 2026 ‘Supergirl’ movie could connect to the storyline James Gunn is building with the ‘Superman’ films, it makes sense for it to be part of the larger DC Universe franchise.
