James Gunn Explains How Krypto’s Supergirl Return Is Different From His Superman Appearance

Krypto, the super-powered dog known for causing mischief, will be back in the upcoming Supergirl movie, scheduled for release in June 2026. However, his role will be different than before; instead of just playfully bothering Clark Kent in Superman, he’ll have a new and more meaningful part to play.

The first trailer for the 2026 Supergirl movie shows Krypto making a return appearance. Fans will remember Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, who briefly appeared at the end of Superman to collect her dog. The new trailer features Krypto joining Kara for her 23rd birthday, but also hints at trouble, with a shot of Kara crying as Krypto appears to be in danger in the Supergirl film.

I covered the Supergirl trailer launch event for ScreenRant at CCXP in Brazil on December 7th. The event included a Q&A with star Milly Alcock and director Craig Gillespie, led by James Gunn. After the trailer was shown, Gunn answered a question about Krypto the Superdog, joking about whether he’d finally behave himself in Supergirl after causing trouble in the Superman movie.

This dog isn’t well-behaved – he’s actually quite a handful. While Kara loves him, Clark finds him really irritating.

Even though Krypto saved Clark and was a good companion, Clark (played by David Corenswet) often pointed out Krypto’s mischievous behavior in the 2025 film. Krypto was a lively and playful dog who had trouble focusing and sometimes got a little out of control. This could be frustrating for Clark, as Krypto occasionally distracted him from his important work, making him both helpful and a challenge. Clark cared for Krypto deeply and hoped he would improve his behavior.

Kara sees Krypto very differently, which completely changes how he’s portrayed in her movie and makes him a much more sympathetic character. While he’s still the same dog we know from Superman, audiences experience his role in a new way when the story is told through Kara’s eyes – it’s a big shift from how he’s seen when focused on Clark’s perspective.

Kara felt Krypto could do no wrong and accepted him completely. While she still held some anger towards Clark, Krypto was the only family member who consistently offered Kara unconditional love and unwavering support. Clark had his parents, Ma and Pa Kent, but Kara had Krypto.

In Superman, when Krypto misbehaves, even though he’s endearing, the movie wants viewers to share Clark’s annoyance. However, in Supergirl, Kara’s strong bond with Krypto will likely make audiences much more understanding of his antics. Even if, as James Gunn has said, Krypto is technically a “bad dog,” we’ll probably see him in a more positive light because he’s Kara’s close friend and feels like family.
