James Gunn’s new Superman movie, starring David Corenswet, introduces a fresh version of the iconic hero in the DC Universe. The film includes subtle references to previous Superman stories, notably the TV show Smallville. This connection is seen with the character of Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, who heads the company LuthorCorp – a business first established in the Smallville series.
James Gunn commented on Threads after someone shared a photo from the set of Man of Tomorrow. The photo showed a character, Sydney Happersen, wearing a shirt with the LuthorCorp logo. The original poster expressed their satisfaction that the DC Universe was using ‘LuthorCorp’ instead of ‘LexCorp’ as the branding.

Following a fan’s comment that Lex Luthor, being a narcissist, would likely want to distance his company from his family—regardless of whether his father, Lionel, founded it or met with misfortune—James Gunn clarified his reasoning for naming the company “LuthorCorp” instead of “LexCorp.” He pointed out that family names are generally less common than first names, making “LuthorCorp” a logical choice.
It’s not a surprise that the team behind the new Superman movie appreciates Smallville. Both David Corenswet, who will play Clark Kent, and Nicholas Hoult have talked about how much they loved the show starring Tom Welling. In fact, Corenswet has said Welling was his Superman, and Hoult looked up to Michael Rosenbaum as his ideal Lex Luthor while growing up.
In a June 2025 interview with Entertainment Weekly, David Corenswet noted that people often compare his appearance to Tom Welling, who famously played Superman and Clark Kent in the series Smallville. Corenswet said that he shares some physical similarities with most actors who have played Superman, which he finds fitting for a superhero who is traditionally recognizable without a mask.
In a March 2024 interview on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast, ‘Inside of You,’ Nicholas Hoult shared that he first encountered Michael Rosenbaum’s portrayal of Lex Luthor while watching ‘Smallville’ as a child. He was around 11 or 12 years old at the time, and ‘Smallville’ was his initial introduction to Superman, Lex Luthor, and those classic stories. Hoult enthusiastically praised Rosenbaum’s performance, calling it the best he’d ever seen.
James Gunn and Peter Safran have a strong working relationship, having collaborated on previous projects. Notably, Gunn even voiced a small role – a Raptor guard – in the film Superman, a nod to his appreciation for the show. In a June 2025 interview with ComicBook, Gunn publicly shared his fondness for it.
I drew inspiration from a lot of sources – comics, TV, and movies – and I’m a big fan of Smallville. I especially liked how they used ‘LuthorCorp’ in that show. It felt more believable to me that a corporation wouldn’t simply be named after someone’s first name. Plus, using ‘LuthorCorp’ allowed for the possibility that Lex’s father or mother might have been involved with the company at some point.
Although Lex Luthor was arrested at the end of Superman and initially sent to Belle Reve, Nicholas Hoult, who played Lex, returned for Peacemaker season 2. There, Lex negotiated a transfer to the more secure Van Kull Maximum Security Prison. However, it won’t be long before the notorious Superman villain is out of prison.
Both Nicholas Hoult and David Corenswet will reprise their roles in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow movie. Their characters, Lex Luthor and Superman, will have to team up to face a new danger. Sources say the villain Brainiac will be the main enemy in the sequel.
As a huge Superman fan, I was thrilled to hear that Man of Tomorrow is finally slated to start filming in 2026! Even better, they’ve now officially set a release date for the movie – July 9, 2027. I’ve already marked my calendar!
