I’m really excited to hear James Gunn talk about where he’s taking the DC Universe! He mentioned he wants to dive deeper into a particular type of story, and 2026 sounds huge for us fans. We’re getting new HBO Max shows like Lanterns, and movies featuring Supergirl and Clayface – I can’t wait! It sounds like he’s not stopping there either, and wants to explore even more ways to tell stories within the DCU. It’s a really promising time to be a DC fan!
As a huge DC fan, I was thrilled to see James Gunn respond to a question on Threads about more animated shows for younger viewers. He basically confirmed that, yes, he’s definitely planning a few! It’s awesome to know DC is thinking about content for all ages and expanding the DC Universe in fun, new ways. I’m really excited to see what he comes up with!
Currently, the DC Universe only has one short-form animated series like this: Krypto Saves the Day! from Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios. It features the same version of Krypto from the 2025 Superman movie, and shows him being a hero in Metropolis. The three episodes (each five to six minutes long) highlight powers we didn’t see in the movie, and show Krypto causing some playful trouble while saving the day – from a school bus and a cruise ship to a Halloween candy emergency!
As a big DC fan, I’m excited about what James Gunn and Peter Safran are building at DC Studios! Right now, the only animated shorts they’ve announced beyond the Krypto series are those already released. But the good news is we’re getting at least three new live-action shows this year as part of the first chapter, ‘Gods and Monsters’: Supergirl, Lanterns, and Clayface. And if you haven’t seen it yet, Krypto Saves the Day! is streaming on HBO Max – it’s a fun watch!
How DC May Expand Into Animation Genre

Beyond the Krypto animated shorts, DC Studios has several options for growing its animation offerings within the DC Universe.
A new animated Blue Beetle series is in the works, and it’s bringing back Xolo Maridueña, who starred in the 2023 Blue Beetle movie. Announced earlier in 2024, Maridueña is eager to start recording his part, and fans are hoping to see the character return before the year is over.
James Gunn is developing several other shows based on DC characters, including one featuring Starfire from the Teen Titans. This show, like Creature Commandos, might be a series of short-form videos instead of traditional episodes. Other projects in development are My Adventures with Green Lantern and DC Super Powers, which could allow DC to create short stories focusing on its main heroes.
While the specifics are still being developed, James Gunn has confirmed that DC Studios will continue to prioritize animated projects alongside its live-action films and shows as part of the DC Universe.
