James Gunn, head of DC Studios, has revealed when the Supergirl movie will take place within the new DC Universe (DCU). It will be the second major film released as part of the DCU, and will center on Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl. While Milly Alcock made a quick appearance as Supergirl in Superman, this new film will fully explore her story and further connect the DCU.
With the DC Universe expanding, fans were curious about how new movies and shows connect to the established timeline. So far, the DCU is progressing in release order, and this will also be the case for the upcoming Supergirl movie. James Gunn confirmed on Threads that Supergirl takes place between the events of Superman and Man of Tomorrow.
This confirms that Supergirl’s origin story won’t happen at the same time as Superman’s, but before it. The show will also feature flashbacks to Kara’s life on Krypton, revealing details about the planet’s destruction and how it led both cousins to Earth.
The series Supergirl starts with Kara reconnecting with her dog, Krypto, who appeared at the end of Superman, and celebrating her 23rd birthday. The story then follows a path similar to the Woman of Tomorrow comic book, as Kara teams up with a young girl named Ruthye to avenge the death of her father.
It’s now official: these events happen after the Superman movie. This means Kara’s story will continue from her debut in the 2025 film and prepare her for future roles in the DC Universe.
James Gunn has confirmed that his upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, will be set after the events of Supergirl, clarifying that the stories won’t happen at the same time as previously speculated.
Directed by Craig Gillespie and featuring Milly Alcock, Jason Momoa, Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham, the movie Supergirl is scheduled to hit theaters on June 26, 2026.
Supergirl’s Timeline Placement Opens Up A World of Possibility

Confirming this timeline is great news because it means Supergirl could appear in Man of Tomorrow.
If the movies had happened at the same time, it would have explained why Alcock wasn’t in the Superman sequel. However, since Supergirl now happens earlier in the timeline than Man of Tomorrow, the movie can introduce a storyline that leads Supergirl into future DCU films, with Superman 2 being the most likely next step.
Although much of the Supergirl movie seems to be happening elsewhere, it still leaves open the possibility of her returning to Earth by the end. With both Superman and Supergirl on the same planet, and Supergirl likely overcoming her reluctance to be a hero, they could team up and save the world together.
Sources strongly suggest David Corenswet will make a brief appearance as Superman in the upcoming Supergirl movie. This could help link Supergirl to both of the Superman films, creating a shared cinematic universe.
James Gunn demonstrated his love for team-ups in Superman, and now he has the opportunity to create an even larger team in Man of Tomorrow. With a foundation already established in the DCU, and actors Aaron Pierre (Green Lantern) and Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl) confirmed to return, adding Supergirl would set the stage for a complete Justice League movie in the new DC Universe.
