James Gunn Confirms Plans To Reveal The Real Direction Of The New DCU Soon

James Gunn, who leads DC Studios, has stated he’ll soon share his vision for the future of the DCU. Despite the DCU being new-it’s only been around for a few months-fans are eager to learn where the interconnected stories are headed. While Gunn hasn’t presented a detailed plan like Marvel’s MCU, which builds towards large-scale events, he does have a plan in place. Unlike the MCU, he hasn’t publicly revealed a specific roadmap yet.

According to DC Studios head James Gunn, viewers will get a preview of the future of the DCU during the closing moments of Peacemaker Season 2. The mature-themed HBO Max series is finishing up on Thursday, October 9, with a finale that Gunn and his team have been heavily promoting.

James Gunn replied to a fan on Threads who wondered if the ending of Peacemaker would offer a “hint” about the direction of the new DCU. Gunn responded with, “something beyond a hint”:

Q: “Will Episode 8 of ‘Peacemaker’ tease where the DCU is going?”

A: “More than tease!”

Gunn had hinted at Peacemaker‘s significant role within the larger DC Universe. Before the Season 2 debut, he told Rotten Tomatoes that the direction this season takes is crucial to the overall DCU and its future plans.

It’s still unclear exactly what this all means, as there are two more episodes of the popular superhero series yet to be released. However, it definitely points towards a huge finale for the mature-themed DCU comedy, and sets the stage for the upcoming DC Studio projects next year – including Lanterns, Supergirl, and Clayface.

Peacemaker Season 2 is the first live-action TV show and the third project overall to launch the new DCU. This new series on HBO Max continues the story of Christopher Smith, also known as Peacemaker (played by John Cena), as he stumbles upon a seemingly perfect alternate world where everything he’s ever wanted has happened.

John Cena once again takes the lead in Peacemaker, with returning cast members from Season 1 like Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, and Steve Agee as John Economos. New episodes of Peacemaker Season 2 are released on HBO Max every Thursday at 9 p.m. ET.

How Will Peacemaker Season 2 Set Up the Future of the DCU?

Viewers following Peacemaker Season 2 might be wondering how this HBO Max show – centered around a struggling, relatively minor superhero – could potentially shape the future of the larger franchise. But it’s certainly possible that it will.

So far this season, viewers have seen hints of the larger DCU. The first episode showed Chris attempting to join the Justice Gang, the fifth episode briefly referenced Superman‘s battle with a giant monster, and the sixth episode featured a surprising and colorful appearance by the villain Lex Luthor.

But what is to come will seemingly blow all of these smaller Easter eggs out of the water. 

As a big fan, I’ve noticed how much Peacemaker ties into James Gunn’s vision for Superman. Because of that, I’m pretty sure the main purpose of this new streaming series is to lay the groundwork for Gunn’s upcoming sequel to the awesome Man of Tomorrow.

The movie confirms that David Corenswet’s Superman will have to join forces with Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor to fight a shared enemy. Lex’s appearance in Peacemaker might set the stage for this team-up, as the character is now collaborating with the U.S. government through ARGUS.

Perhaps ARGUS is the agency that detects this emerging danger and teams up the Supes with Lex to defeat the extraordinary enemy that has appeared.

There’s been talk that the main villain will be Brainiac, a super-intelligent being from another world who tries to gather and record information about entire universes. A major part of Peacemaker Season 2 has involved traveling between universes, as Chris found an Earth where he’s the hero he always dreamed of being.

Might finding this other Earth – and figuring out how to move between different realities – somehow alert Brainiac? Perhaps the show’s ending will broadcast a signal throughout the multiverse, attracting the attention of this famous and powerful DCU villain? That would certainly explain things logically.
