HBO’s The Sopranos was a groundbreaking show that put the network on the map for producing high-quality, thought-provoking television. It continues to find new fans through HBO Max, and James Gandolfini’s unforgettable performance as Tony Soprano lives on. Interestingly, his agent had a funny reaction when the show’s creator, David Chase, expressed an unusual worry about casting him in the role.
James Gandolfini died back in 2013, but his generations of fans are still re-watching The Sopranos and learning more about his legacy. During an excerpt from the biography Gandolfini: Jim, Tony, and the Life of a Legend, (via Vulture) Chase recalled his big concern about giving the Get Shorty actor the lead role. In his words:
Okay, so I think he’s really talented. My only worry is whether he comes across as intimidating enough.
If you’ve watched The Sopranos, this idea might seem funny. James Gandolfini made Tony Soprano a very believable mob boss – someone who didn’t hesitate to threaten people, even those he cared about. He was so committed to the role that he’d even use rocks to create physical discomfort and frustration, helping him get into character as Tony. It’s a clever method, isn’t it?

You can start watching HBO Max for as little as $9.99 per month. With an HBO Max subscription, you’ll have access to a huge library of content, including popular shows like The Sopranos, plus thousands of movies, documentaries, and more. Check out their plans and deals now!
What makes Tony Soprano such a compelling character is his surprising mix of toughness and hidden vulnerability. Creator David Chase needed an actor who could convincingly portray both sides, and James Gandolfini delivered effortlessly. According to his manager, Nancy Sanders, she told Chase her thoughts on how to approach the role, saying:
David, if you’re only worried about whether he seems intimidating enough… I’d get it if you said he wasn’t in great shape or was losing hair. But he is threatening. He’s the right person for the job.
The discussion brought up an interesting question: what kind of actor did David Chase initially envision for Tony Soprano? Was he looking for someone who could convincingly become the mob boss, or someone who would genuinely make audiences uneasy? Thankfully, he ultimately chose James Gandolfini, which was the right decision.
Before he passed away, James Gandolfini revealed he wasn’t sure he’d be cast as Tony. He told Lorraine Bracco, the actress who played Dr. Melfi, in an Interview Magazine conversation that he doubted he’d get the part, explaining:
I remember saying something like, ‘I’m perfectly capable of playing this role, but they’ll probably choose someone conventionally attractive instead.’ I figured they’d go with one of those handsome actors with an Irish look that you see on television all the time, so I was really surprised when I actually landed the part.
Everyone expected James Gandolfini to get the part, and he became iconic for playing Tony Soprano. Though he continued acting in many projects after The Sopranos ended its six-season run on HBO, he remains most strongly associated with that role for many viewers.
David Chase’s acclaimed series is experiencing a resurgence on HBO with several new projects. The prequel, The Many Saints of Newark, skillfully recreated the feel of the original, and the documentary Wise Guy provided an inside look at how the iconic show was made.
You can now watch every episode of The Sopranos on HBO Max. I’m going to go re-watch it and enjoy James Gandolfini’s incredible performance as Tony Soprano again!
