Despite the huge success of Avatar: Fire and Ash in theaters, the director’s upcoming film has been delayed. Though he’s famous for creating large-scale fantasy action movies, his next project is a departure – a technologically innovative 3D concert film called Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour.
The innovative 3D concert film, directed and produced by James Cameron, was filmed during Billie Eilish’s 2025 tour in Manchester, England. Originally planned for release on March 20, 2026, Cameron recently announced on Instagram that the film will now premiere on May 8, 2026.
We’re improving the film’s editing and adding exciting new 3D technology, plus some bonus behind-the-scenes content we think you’ll really enjoy. “HIT ME HARD AND SOFT: THE TOUR (LIVE IN 3D)” will now be released on Friday, May 8th. It’ll be worth the wait!
Making this movie was just as complex and demanding as any of James Cameron’s biggest films. Billie Eilish first mentioned the project in July 2025, after finishing the U.K. part of her Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour, but details were kept secret until it was revealed as a concert movie for theaters.
Similar to many of James Cameron’s films, this movie employed cutting-edge technology, developed in collaboration with Meta Platforms and Cameron’s own Lightstorm Vision. Cameron has shared that the idea for a 3D film originated during a conversation with Maggie Baird, Eilish’s mother and a friend of his. He explained that at the time,
I recently spoke with Billie’s mother, Maggie, and we discovered we share a lot of the same concerns about food and sustainability – that’s why both my wife, Susie, and Maggie are vegan. Maggie organizes food options for Billie while she’s on tour, and she’s now joining us as an executive producer on the follow-up to our film, The Game Changers. This new film will focus on athletes who eat plant-based diets.
Concert Movies Have Been Huge Recently

Disney+
Seeing concert footage used to mean you had to be there in person. But over the past ten years, many popular artists have started sharing concerts in theaters—either through special recordings or live broadcasts—making it much easier to experience their shows.
Several major artists have recently released concert films for fans to enjoy at home and in theaters. Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS World Tour is now available on Netflix, Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour premiered in cinemas and then on Prime Video, and Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour was a box office success before streaming on Disney+. Coldplay, BTS, Westlife, and numerous other artists have also released concert films.
