James Cameron has criticized the Academy Awards, specifically mentioning the perceived oversight of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune in recent years. This comes as Cameron’s latest film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, hits theaters globally today, December 19th. It’s the third movie in his Avatar series, following the successful 2009 and 2022 installments, both of which received numerous Academy Award nominations. Cameron, known for Titanic, feels Dune deserved similar recognition.
Both Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water were nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, but James Cameron only received a Best Director nomination for the first Avatar film. In a recent interview with Canada’s The Globe and Mail, Cameron expressed frustration that another director with comparable success never received a nomination for Best Director.
Cameron discussed Denis Villeneuve, the director of the critically acclaimed films Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024), both of which received Best Picture nominations. He noted, “These two Dune films were incredible, especially considering he wasn’t initially seen as a top directorial choice.” Cameron then contrasted focusing on awards with his own approach: “You can chase awards, or you can focus on making movies that audiences actually want to see.”
Cameron admitted he doesn’t focus much on the Academy Awards, despite Titanic‘s numerous nominations. He explained that he doesn’t deliberately create films to please the Academy, noting they often overlook movies like Avatar and other science fiction films. He feels sci-fi rarely receives the recognition it deserves.
Many believe the Academy overlooked Denis Villeneuve for Best Director for both Dune films, and it’s considered a major Oscars snub. Because he wasn’t nominated for the first two movies, it’s doubtful he’ll be recognized for Dune: Part Three, which is scheduled for release in December 2026 and will feature the original cast.
Villeneuve received a previous nomination in this category for his 2016 science fiction film, Arrival, which was also up for Best Picture. He’s widely considered one of today’s top directors, and he’s now set to direct the next James Bond film, Bond 26, currently in development with Amazon MGM Studios.
Science fiction and horror films haven’t traditionally done well at the Oscars, though occasionally one becomes a massive success and does win. Despite Dune potentially not being considered a typical “Oscar movie,” other respected filmmakers recognize Denis Villeneuve’s innovative work for its true merit.
