James Cameron Says Long-Rumored ‘Fantastic Voyage’ Could Happen 2026

James Cameron, the director behind hits like Terminator and Avatar, is revisiting plans for a remake of the 1966 sci-fi film Fantastic Voyage. He’s been wanting to update the classic story for decades, and now says he’s actively developing it, with a possible start date in 2026. While famous as a director, Cameron is also a successful producer with many projects in the works.

James Cameron’s main focus right now is ensuring the success of the Avatar franchise. Although the recently released third film is nearing $400 million in earnings, Cameron knows that securing funding for the fourth and fifth installments won’t be simple. In an interview with Deadline‘s Behind the Lens, he explained that while the films are likely to be both expensive and profitable, it’s not guaranteed that they’ll earn enough to justify the cost.

During a discussion about 20th Century Studios and how it’s changed since the Fox days, Cameron shared his thoughts on the film Fantastic Voyage. While the conversation touched on Planet of the Apes and Journey to the Center of the Earth, Cameron specifically focused on the classic Fantastic Voyage and a remake he had planned.

I’ve been developing a project called ‘Fantastic Voyage’ for some time now, and I’m aiming to start production next year. I’m producing it, and I’m currently collaborating with a director to refine the script. We’re definitely moving forward with it.

The ‘Fantastic Voyage’ Remake Has Been in the Works for Decades

It appears Cameron is discussing the potential remake of Fantastic Voyage, a project that both David S. Goyer and Guillermo del Toro have considered in the past. Goyer recently shared his thoughts on the project with Forbes magazine, stating:

Guillermo and I are good friends and have collaborated on around five or six projects. We almost worked together on ‘Fantastic Voyage,’ and had a production designer lined up and everything. While we were preparing for that movie, Guillermo told me he had a deal with Searchlight and asked if I had any scripts that could be made for around $20 million. I gave him a script called ‘Antlers,’ and we ended up producing it together.

David Goyer explained that the film Fantastic Voyage didn’t move forward due to changes at Fox, but he felt it had a lot of potential. He really enjoyed collaborating with Guillermo del Toro and James Cameron on the project, and that experience eventually led to him working with Cameron again on Terminator: Dark Fate. They had a great working relationship.

I’ve been friends with Guillermo for a long time, and I’d love to finally get our movie, Fantastic Voyage, made. With my friend Steve Asbell now in charge at 20th Century Studios, I’m thinking of reaching out to see if we can make it happen. We also wrote a Star Wars script together that never got produced, so there are a couple of projects we’ve always wanted to bring to life.
