James Cameron is famous for creating visually stunning films like Terminator, Titanic, and the Avatar series (available on Disney+). Though his latest movie, Fire and Ash, just came out, he recently discussed a joke Amy Poehler made at the Golden Globes more than ten years ago about his past marriage and career—and he admits he’s still bothered by it.
Amy Poehler and Tina Fey famously hosted the Golden Globes for several years, becoming well-known for their witty and sometimes pointed jokes about the celebrities watching. James Cameron was the target of one of those jokes back in 2013, and he’s just now talking about it. Here’s a look at what happened.
What James Cameron Recently Said About The Globes Joke
While promoting the latest Avatar film, James Cameron recently reflected on his career. In an interview with The New York Times, he discussed a joke made about him over ten years ago at the Golden Globes by Amy Poehler. The joke touched on both his image as a demanding director and his past marriage to fellow filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow. Cameron shared with the publication:
I was really disappointed by Amy Poehler’s comment. It felt unnecessarily mean-spirited, especially at an event meant to celebrate movies and the people who make them, not to tear each other down. I can usually take a joke, but that one just crossed a line. Honestly, the fact that so many people laughed says a lot about their assumptions about me, even though they don’t really know anything about my work or who I am as a person.
Honestly, it really seemed to bother the director – not just the joke itself, but how massively it blew up and how the audience reacted. I remember watching the 2013 Golden Globes, and the reaction was huge! You could see all the actors and stars laughing and looking genuinely shocked. The director explained it really showed how some people perceive Cameron, even those who’ve never actually worked with him. It was a bit of a revealing moment, I thought.
What Amy Poehler Said About James Cameron
What was the joke that still seems to bother Cameron? The hosts, Poehler and another, mentioned that Cameron’s ex-wife, Kathryn Bigelow, was nominated for her film Zero Dark Thirty, a well-regarded thriller that included scenes of torture. That’s when Poehler delivered the joke in question.
When it comes to torture I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron.
I have to say, seeing that clip again is hilarious! While a lot of people contributed to the joke, Aubrey Plaza was the one who delivered the line, and it totally killed in the room – you could just feel the energy! It blew up online pretty quickly too, as Cameron has said. You can check it out for yourself on Twitter – it’s a classic moment!
Although many who watched the Golden Globes may not remember the joke, James Cameron clearly does. Even though it was a jab at his career, he’s remained productive, releasing both Avatar: The Way of Water and Fire and Ash in recent years.
