French-Turkish actor, known for his impactful performances throughout his career, sadly passed away on Friday, October 31st, at the age of 72. His family announced that he had been fighting cancer. The news was also confirmed by AFP, the French news agency.

Born in Istanbul in 1953 as Baruh Djaki Karyo, the actor grew up in Paris and received classical theater training with the Daniel Sorano company, later performing at the National Theatre of Strasbourg. He transitioned to film in the 1980s, achieving early recognition in the 1982 film La Balance. His performance earned him a César Award nomination and set the tone for his compelling and dramatic roles over the next forty years.

Tchéky Karyo first gained international recognition in 1990 for his role as the stern intelligence operative Bob in Luc Besson’s La Femme Nikita. He then moved to Hollywood, appearing alongside Mel Gibson in 1492: Conquest of Paradise in 1992. He played the villain Fouchet in Bad Boys with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, and had a part in Pierce Brosnan’s first James Bond film, GoldenEye (1995). Karyo continued to work on notable films, including another movie with Mel Gibson, The Patriot (2000), and Kiss of the Dragon (2001), solidifying his reputation as a reliable actor in both big-budget action movies and sweeping historical dramas.

During the 2010s, Jérémie Karyo shifted his focus from film to television. He gained recognition playing detective Julien Baptiste in the British series The Missing (2014-2016), which proved popular enough to spawn a spin-off, Baptiste, that aired for two seasons (2019-2021). In 2023, he continued his television work with the BBC comedy-thriller Boat Story.
