Jack Black Pleads for Part in Video Game Adaptation ‘Like a Dragon: Yakuza’

Video game movies and shows have been getting better lately, but not every adaptation is a hit. The 2024 Prime Video series Like a Dragon: Yakuza, based on the popular video game franchise, received mixed reactions, with some viewers feeling it lacked the humor and playful energy of the games. Despite this, one actor—who will soon be in the Super Mario Galaxy movie—has expressed interest in being involved in a future Yakuza adaptation.

So, I was reading an interview with the cast of The Super Mario Bros. Movie over on Screen Rant, and they were asking everyone what other video game they’d love to be in. Jack Black, who was amazing as Bowser, gave a really fun answer! He said he’d be totally up for a Yakuza movie. Now, Yakuza is a Sega series, mostly set in Japan with a Japanese cast, and Jack Black himself admitted that might be… a little tricky for him to pull off, but he’s definitely interested!

I’m interested in being in the next Yakuza game! I’m not sure if there’s a role that would fit me – maybe a larger American character – but I’m open to discussing it. Sega, please get in touch if you’re considering me.

The first season of Like a Dragon: Yakuza essentially tells the story of how Kazuma Kiryu became the main character players know and love. While there hasn’t been any news about a second season, likely due to the show receiving mixed reactions, there’s a lot of material from the video games that Sega could adapt further, either as another season or a movie.

Prime Video, the streaming service behind the Yakuza series, is heavily involved in adapting video games for television. They’ve already produced Secret Level, an anthology showcasing different games, and two seasons of Fallout, which expands on the popular Bethesda video game franchise. With the upcoming God of War series also in the works, it’s clear Prime Video is committed to bringing more video game stories to the screen.

Jack Black has proven he enjoys bringing video games to life with roles in both Super Mario and Minecraft films (with another Minecraft movie planned). Now, he’s expressing interest in the Yakuza series, known for its over-the-top villains. This could give Black a chance to play an unusual character while still fitting into the Yakuza world, and help bring the game’s signature humor and craziness to a film adaptation.
