I’m still seeing continuing to voice her disapproval of and , the stars of . It’s really not letting up – this is happening just a few days after she last publicly shared her thoughts, so the situation is definitely ongoing. It seems like she’s really doubling down on her criticism.
For years, J.K. Rowling has faced backlash regarding her opinions on transgender actors, leading many celebrities to separate themselves from her. Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson have been particularly outspoken in their support of the LGBTBQ+ community and especially transgender rights, which created conflict with Rowling. Following an interview where Watson discussed her connection to the Harry Potter author, offering understanding towards differing viewpoints, Rowling seemingly rejected this gesture. She responded by resharing a satirical take on the interview and then elaborated on their relationship in a detailed post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sept. 29.
In her post, Rowling states, “Emma lacks significant life experience and doesn’t realize how much she doesn’t know,” and argues that “Emma and Dan have repeatedly shown over the past few years that they believe our past working relationship gives them a special permission – actually, a duty – to publicly criticize me and my opinions.”
The Wizarding World stated that the two actors still act as the main public representatives for the world I built, and that she understands she doesn’t expect any actor who portrayed one of her characters to always agree with her. She clarified that she isn’t entitled to their lasting support.
Rowling pointed out that Emma Watson and her fellow actors are fully within their rights to support beliefs about gender identity. She emphasized these beliefs are legally protected and she wouldn’t want to see anyone face job loss, harm, or threats because of them. She also shared that she feels a protective instinct towards the main actors, as she’s known them since they were children.
J.K. Rowling Singled Out Emma Watson’s Recent Interview for Her New Comments
Rowling has frequently mentioned Watson and Radcliffe, most recently earlier this year when Radcliffe, and Rupert Grint again. She indicated that watching the Golden Trio actors in a film “immediately makes it unwatchable” for her. She wrote, “Three guesses. Sorry, but I couldn’t resist.”
However, she explained, “For the past few years, I’ve repeatedly declined invitations from journalists to comment on Emma specifically, most notably on the Witch Trials of JK Rowling,” she continued, referencing a video linked to her post detailing her prosecution, and mentioning that Watson had sent her a “handwritten note,” even though she had her phone number. “Emma had just publicly poured more petrol on the flames, yet thought a one line expression of concern from her would reassure me of her fundamental sympathy and kindness.“
The author shared that she chose to speak out on this matter because of recent events. Rowling emphasized that the Little Women actress “is rightly free to disagree with me” and also “to discuss her feelings about me in public,” but pointed out “I have the same right, and I’ve finally decided to exercise it.”
