Following numerous delays and only vague whispers about the state of Rapture from Netflix’s BioShock movie, we now have solid information to share – news that fans have been eagerly anticipating. A prominent producer has revealed which storyline the upcoming film adaptation will focus on initially, a decision that seems perfectly suited for a deep, atmospheric dive into this fascinating universe.
During an interview with The Direct for the promotion of “The Long Walk”, producer Roy Lee clarified that the forthcoming movie will be a faithful adaptation of the 2007 original game, instead of a remake or spin-off. In Lee’s own words:
“The film we’re making is a direct adaption of the 2007 game version.
Netflix requests that we maintain confidentiality, but without a doubt, it’s inspired by the initial BioShock video game.
Lee further elaborated on how Francis Lawrence’s work schedule for The Hunger Games, along with some extra script work, momentarily shuffled things around but didn’t derail BioShock from its intended path. He went on to say:
The Long Walk was produced because BioShock got delayed, which gave us more time to work on the script. During this scripting phase, we filmed The Long Walk, but by then he had already agreed to do the next Hunger Games movie. Once the Hunger Games production is finished, they’ll call him back and right now the script is still being refined.
The timeline aligns with Lawrence’s existing engagements. As of now, the filming for “The Hunger Games: Sunrise of the Reaping” is happening in Spain, with its theatrical release scheduled for 2026, specifically in November. If things go as planned by Lee, “BioShock” will follow next, with its screenplay being refined during this period. No casting or release date has been announced yet, but Michael Green (known for “Logan”) is working on the script, and it’s still slated for a global premiere on Netflix whenever it becomes ready.
If you’re new to the BioShock series or need a reminder, the initial game begins when your character Jack gets stranded after a plane crash in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. He stumbles upon Rapture, an Art Deco city submerged beneath the sea that was intended to be a utopia but has since become dilapidated. The story combines elements of survival horror, sharp satire, and a shocking twist that is still talked about in gaming circles today. The original game led to two sequels: BioShock 2 in 2010 and BioShock Infinite in 2013. It’s often recognized as a benchmark in narrative design.

Translating the series has consistently posed a challenge for filmmakers eager to bring it to the big screen, as they grapple with budget constraints and the need for convincing underwater city scenes that have been neglected over time. Achieving this level of realism is no easy feat, given that creating a believable crumbling underwater metropolis relies heavily on visual effects (VFX).
However, the terrain for adaptation has evolved significantly. Notably, hit genre series and films such as “The Last of Us” (streamable with an HBO Max subscription), along with other successful game-to-screen translations, demonstrate that intricate world-building can coexist with strong character development and consistent tone. Given Lawrence’s recent success in adapting books to screen, like “The Long Walk,” and his ongoing work on the “Hunger Games” films, he appears well-equipped to manage both grandiose spectacle and the thought-provoking elements that made “BioShock” stand out from a mere monster mash, making it a game I frequently revisit.

Hearing that Lawrence remains involved with the project and that his movie concept aligns with the initial game, along with waiting in line for it, finally gives a genuine sense of returning to Rapture. Despite two decades of false beginnings, I maintain a guarded sense of anticipation.
Francis Lawrence’s latest, The Long Walk, hits the 2025 movie schedule on September 12.
