David Harbour’s tenure as Hellboy was a one-time deal, but he swiftly found success in comic book movies afterward. Known for his role on Stranger Things, Harbour made his MCU debut in 2021, portraying Alexei Shostakov, aka Red Guardian, in Black Widow. Later, he lent his voice to an alternate version of the character in What If… ? Season 3 last year. Now, Harbour is set to reprise his role as Red Guardian in the 2025 slate for Thunderbolts*. Currently, he’s busy reprising his MCU character for the December 2026 release of Avengers: Doomsday, and Harbour shared his surprise at the massive scope of this upcoming Marvel production.
As less than a year and a half remains until the release of Doomsday, actor Harbour has shared insights about his collaboration with directors Joe and Anthony Russo on their upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, set to be its 39th. In an interview with ScreenRant, he reminisced:
Initially, I had my doubts when we began, but this film promises to be exceptional, boasting a unique blend of elements. To be honest, I can’t fully comprehend it, but the Russo Brothers seem to have a secret recipe for success. Their knack for balancing comedy, drama, suspense, scale, and epicness is evident in movies like Civil War and Infinity War, and it’s truly astounding.

Ryan Reynolds Speaks Out on Deadpool’s Alleged Role in Avengers: Doomsday, Squashing the Curiosity Sparked by His Puzzling Online Message
Couldn’t Benedict Cumberbatch’s persistent affirmations about his involvement in “Avengers: Doomsday” lead to the question of why Marvel Studios is being so cryptic about it?
Joe and Anthony Russo initially joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to direct “Captain America: Civil War” in 2014, and since then, they’ve taken on “Captain America: Civil War,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” and “Avengers: Endgame,” which are some of the most significant films in this franchise. Given their impressive track record within the series, David Harbour felt confident that “Avengers: Doomsday” would continue in the same vein, and so far, his faith has not been misplaced. Filming for “Doomsday” began at the end of April, and it’s anticipated to last for six months.
Despite being assured by the Russos that he was in capable hands, David Harbour was nevertheless amazed by the intricate sets built for “Avengers: Doomsday”. He was equally impressed by the high-level acting abilities of his co-stars and the accommodations they received. In his own words, he expressed his feelings thusly:
“Even with the Russos assuring me their competence, I was still taken aback by the elaborate sets for Avengers: Doomsday. The talent around me and the amenities offered were equally impressive.
This set is unlike anything I’ve ever encountered before in my entire life. I’ve never witnessed such grandeur. You noticed those luxurious trailers for each cast member, right? It’s as if stepping onto this set feels like being part of a movie itself. And there, delivering his speech, was that famous actor whose name I won’t forget anytime soon. It’s simply mind-blowing to walk around the room and realize that I am actually on a film set among these accomplished actors and actresses.
The Red Guardian is set to rejoin his fellow New Avengers: Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), John Walker/U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Ava Starr/Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Bob Reynolds/Sentry (Lewis Pullman). Together, they’ll unite with the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and other characters to confront a universal threat posed by Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. Interestingly, the post-credits scene of Thunderbolts hints at this alliance, as it shows the New Avengers observing the arrival of a spaceship bearing the Fantastic Four emblem.
As an avid movie enthusiast, I’m eagerly counting down the days until we get more news about “Avengers: Doomsday”. But in the meantime, let’s not forget that you can now stream the thrilling Marvel series, “Thunderbolts”, on Disney+ with your subscription!
And if that’s not enough to keep you entertained, get ready because Chief Jim Hopper (David Harbour) is making a comeback soon. The final season of “Stranger Things” is set to drop in three parts exclusively for Netflix subscribers in the next few months. So grab your popcorn and settle in for an unforgettable ride!
