Originally, this month’s horror movie lineup was going to include the new Mortal Kombat II video game adaptation. However, the game’s release was delayed by eight months to give it a better chance at the box office. While disappointing initially, the delay has actually built even more excitement among fans. Recent enthusiastic comments from Ed Boon, one of the creators of the franchise, are also helping to increase the hype.
Honestly, everything Ed Boon said is still replaying in my mind, and it’s just adding to the hype I already have for the 2026 movie! ScreenRant asked him how the sequel would top the action in the first film, and he sounded completely confident. He truly believes Mortal Kombat II will be a better sequel, and he said:
Honestly, I think this movie has at least twice as many fight scenes as anything else I’ve seen! It’s just non-stop action, which is amazing. What really gets me, though, is how they blend martial arts with supernatural powers. It leads to these incredibly wild and over-the-top battles that are so much fun to watch.
The fights in 2021’s Mortal Kombat were already impressive, despite a somewhat uneven story. Now, the new film promises at least twice as many fight scenes, which suggests the actors endured a grueling process. Director Ed Boon points out that while the Mortal Kombat franchise is known for its realistic and brutal action, many of the iconic moves are actually physically impossible.
When making a live-action movie, it would have been simple to reduce the fantastical parts to save money and simplify filming. However, that wouldn’t capture the true spirit of MK. As Boon explained further:
The characters perform unbelievable feats, but it’s incredibly entertaining. The video game is the same way – it’s an extremely realistic take on fighting, and that really comes across in the movie.
It might seem easier to adapt a fighting game with a simple story than a complex one, but that actually makes the action sequences even more important. They need to be visually exciting to keep audiences engaged. Ed Boon, who’s been involved with the franchise for a long time, admits he was protective of the source material, and could have disliked the film if it didn’t meet his expectations. Fortunately, he’s seen the finished movie and is very happy with how it turned out.
- Mortal Kombat 2 Looks Amazing, But Here Are 5 Things That Would Make It The Perfect Mortal Kombat Movie For Me
The first trailer shows Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage joining the fight with confidence and skill. He’ll have to battle other Earthrealm warriors to stop the powerful Shao Khan from gaining more power. The trailer focuses heavily on the action, suggesting the movie will be packed with fighting sequences. Let’s just hope the tournament doesn’t involve any board games!
Screenwriter Jeremy Slater enthusiastically continued to praise Mortal Kombat II, adding that it’s an amazing game.
Okay, I might’ve already gotten a talking-to for getting too excited about this film, but seriously, if it was released this year, it would have easily been the best action movie of the year. As it is, since it’s coming out next year, prepare yourselves – it’s going to be the best action movie of next year, hands down. Simon and the whole cast absolutely nailed it. It’s just… incredible.
I’m already planning to see Mortal Kombat II when it comes out in theaters on May 8, 2026, so I definitely don’t need Scorpion to forcefully pull me there!
