IT: Welcome To Derry Season 2 Return Addressed By Star After Stephen King Show’s Quiet Renewal

With the show still awaiting official renewal, one of the stars of IT: Welcome to Derry has shared their thoughts on whether a second season might happen.

This HBO series, created by Andy and Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs (who also works as a showrunner alongside Brad Caleb Kane), tells the story of Pennywise’s terrifying activities in Derry in 1962. It’s a prequel to Stephen King’s novel and connects to the Muschiettis’ previous film adaptations of the same story. The show has been well-received by both critics and viewers, and has proven popular on HBO and HBO Max.

Tenika Davis recently spoke with ScreenRant about the finale of Spartacus: House of Ashur and whether she might return for a second season of IT: Welcome to Derry. When asked about working on both shows, and their shared use of graphic violence, Davis described the experiences as “completely different,” jokingly pointing out that one involved “running around in my underwear on the sand with weapons.”

She also explained that both projects aligned perfectly with her new career focus: playing characters who undergo significant transformations. She’d made this her goal even before she got the part in Welcome to Derry and long before she received the script for the Spartacus spin-off. She jokingly recalled thinking, “Be careful what you wish for,” when she was cast as a monster in the IT prequel, but she’s still excited to return to the role.

Working on ‘Welcome to Derry’ with Amanda Christine, Andy Muschietti, and the whole team was an incredible experience for me. It helped me discover hidden parts of myself and was a lot of fun. I loved playing with each character and would jump at the chance to work with them again.

Tenika Davis played Ida Grogan in the first season of IT: Welcome to Derry. Ida is the mother of Ronnie, who passed away during childbirth before the show begins. Davis’s first appearance is as a frightening hallucination experienced by Ronnie, where she’s almost pulled back into the womb. She is also credited as appearing in the season finale, though her role there isn’t clear.

For the past year, people have been wondering about the future of the show IT: Welcome to Derry. Before it even aired, the director confirmed plans for at least two more seasons. These seasons would go back in time to show how Pennywise hunted victims in the past, similar to events hinted at in the book. This would include exploring the story of the Bradley Gang massacre and the ironworks factory explosion that happened around Easter in 1908.

Even though the show had initial plans and has been successful, IT: Welcome to Derry hasn’t been officially renewed for a second season after two months. HBO’s Casey Bloys explained that the delay isn’t due to a lack of interest, but because the creators, the Muschiettis, are still developing a detailed plan for the next season. They aren’t directly adapting a specific part of the novel, but the show is expected to return.

It doesn’t look like Davis will be back for IT: Welcome to Derry. Because the second season is set in the past, her character, Ronnie, probably won’t appear. This also means Pennywise won’t be able to take the form of Ida. Plus, Ronnie seems to have dealt with the trauma of her mother’s death, so a ghostly appearance of Ida wouldn’t be as frightening or meaningful for the story.

While it’s not certain, there’s still a chance Sadie Sink could return as Wendy Peffercorn in IT: Welcome to Derry. As producer Jason Fuchs mentioned to ScreenRant, the show could explore what happens to the younger characters after the first season, especially why Wendy decides to move back to Derry. Their season finale hinted at a romantic connection between Wendy and Ronnie, and her return could show she’s still dealing with her mother’s death, potentially giving Sadie Sink the opportunity to portray more frightening scenes as Ida.
