As a huge fan of the IT universe, I was genuinely shocked by a major death in episode 7 of Welcome to Derry. It really threw me, especially considering how the first episode ended with the original Losers Club – all except Lilly Bainbridge – seemingly gone. The show did a great job, though, of building up a new team – Will Hanlon, Ronnie Grogan, Rich Santos, Lilly, and Marge Truman – and getting us invested in them. This death feels like it could have huge consequences for how the story unfolds and how it all fits into the established timeline, which is a little scary but also really exciting!
Marge recently joined the close group of friends battling Pennywise and uncovering the mysteries of Derry, and she’s quickly formed strong connections with them. In Episode 7, Marge and Rich admitted their feelings for each other, but their confession came during a difficult and tragic time.
During the attack on the Black Spot, as the building burned, Rich bravely protected Marge. He shielded her from smoke and falling wreckage by covering her with his own body, sacrificing himself to save her life. His selfless act stands as a remarkably heroic, yet heartbreaking, moment in the history of the IT project.
With one episode of Welcome to Derry Season 1 still to go, the fate of characters like Marge is currently unknown. However, several clues suggest Marge may become a very significant figure in the overall story, and if that’s the case, it would be incredibly sad.
Is Marge Truman Richie Tozier’s Mother?

Finn Wolfhard became well-known for playing Richie Tozier in the IT movies released in 2017 and 2019, where he stood out for his humor and courage. When the character Rich Santos appeared in Welcome to Derry, many viewers probably noticed the similar name – and it might be intentional.
Besides sharing similar names, Marge Truman and Richie Tozier’s mother have a lot in common, suggesting Marge might actually be Richie’s mother.
Richie’s mother is named Margaret, also known as Marge. In the novel IT and the recent movie adaptations, she’s often called Maggie, but her complete name is Margaret Tozier.
You know, something I really noticed while watching those IT movies is how similar Marge and Richie are. Richie was always the one cracking jokes to lighten the mood, and Marge did the same thing in Welcome to Derry. She constantly tried to get the Patty Cakes to like her by being funny, sometimes even going a bit too far with it – honestly, it reminded me a lot of Richie’s whole persona. They both really leaned into being the class clown, which was a neat little parallel to see.

There’s another clue suggesting Marge might be Richie’s mother: they share a striking physical similarity. Both characters wear very thick glasses, which is unusual for the world of IT and Welcome to Derry, hinting that this resemblance isn’t accidental.

Given that Rich Santos gave his life to save Marge Truman and was her first love, it’s perfectly logical she would name her son Rich, Richard, or Richie as a way to remember him and honor his sacrifice.
The producers of Welcome to Derry, Andy and Barbara Muschietti, recently told DECIDER that the show will feature at least two major plot twists connected to the members of the Loser’s Club.
There are at least two major surprises that directly tie into the stories of the characters we already know from the Losers’ Club.
Okay, so here’s a wild theory I’ve been mulling over after watching the show: what if Marge is actually Richie’s mom? It sounds crazy, but think about it – Richie’s mother is barely a character in the original IT stories and films. Changing her identity wouldn’t really mess with anything established. Plus, the show has already proven it’s willing to connect characters from the movies and the series, so it’s definitely within the realm of possibility. It would be a huge twist, but honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if they went there.
What Happens to Richie’s Mother in IT?

In the novel, Richie’s mother, Maggie, passes away from an unexplained illness. Before she dies, the story reveals she longed for a daughter she could connect with.
It might not seem like much now, but given Lilly Bainbridge’s history, it’s probable that her story will also end sadly, much like in Welcome to Derry. While it would be devastating, the most likely scenario for her in the Season 1 finale is a return to the Juniper Hill asylum, where she would likely undergo a lobotomy.
The show starts with a scene of someone getting a lobotomy, something we haven’t seen happen in the story yet. This strongly suggests that Lilly will tragically undergo the same procedure later on, likely at the end of the series.
If Maggie Tozier turns out to be Richie’s mother, it might explain her feelings of isolation. Lilly and Marge have become very close, and their bond has grown stronger recently. So, if something were to happen to Lilly, Marge would lose the one female connection she has left.
For now, she still has Ronnie, but if Charlotte and Rose can successfully get Hank Grogan out of Derry and into Canada, Ronnie will go with him – if she makes it through the events of Episode 8 and survives Pennywise.
Regardless of how things shake out, it’s clear Marge remains isolated, lacking any real female connections. This really hammers home the idea that she ultimately steps into a motherly role for Richie, becoming his primary support system.
