Be warned, spoilers follow for IT: Welcome to Derry, season 1, episode 7! The new episode of IT: Welcome to Derry is scaring viewers, and a recent reveal about Pennywise the Clown has created four big mysteries that have left audiences stunned.
In the latest episode of IT: Welcome to Derry, showrunner Jason Fuchs discussed the events that unfolded in the terrifying town of Derry with Grant Hermanns from ScreenRant.
We started thinking about how the original actor who played Pennywise might have affected children. What was it like to watch Bob Gray perform, and how did kids respond to him? Was he a captivating figure, like the Pied Piper? Episode 7 opens with a scene showing Pennywise performing as a real dancing clown – not as the monster he becomes. You see children completely mesmerized by the show, and then, when it ends, they erupt into wild excitement, rushing the stage. It’s in that moment that you see the true form of ‘IT’ – a young boy – observing everything and understanding exactly what’s happening.
Fuchs explains that Pennywise strongly attracts young children, drawing them in with a strange and captivating appeal.
One of the enjoyable things about that episode is seeing the characters piece together the clues and understand what’s happening. We also want to leave viewers with lingering questions about the events of 1908. For example, what really happened to Bob Gray after he went into the woods? It remains a mystery – Ingrid Kersh claims she never saw her father again, and while we found a bloodstained kerchief, his body was never identified. There are still many unanswered questions.
In Stephen King’s novel, the creature known as IT tells Georgie that its real name is Robert “Bob” Gray. Gray was originally from the United Kingdom and came to the United States with very little money. Around 1908, he began performing as a clown named Pennywise, which marked the start of IT’s monstrous transformation.
Okay, so the story jumps ahead to 1935, and things get really interesting. We learn that Bob Gray’s daughter, Ingrid, now an adult, actually saw IT – as Pennywise, naturally – and is convinced her father isn’t himself anymore. She’s desperately trying to save him, believing he’s possessed. The narrative then dives into the details of how Bob ended up lost in the woods before he disappeared – it’s a pretty deep dive into the events leading up to his vanishing.
I’m curious about the initial form IT took as a child. We understand IT later used that form to trap Bob Gray, but that first appearance happened before IT decided to do that. What was the reason for that specific appearance? This season revealed some answers, but it also introduced new questions. Hopefully, these new mysteries will be just as compelling for future fans as the original ones were for me.
IT: Welcome to Derry leaves viewers with many unanswered questions, and while not all of them may be resolved, the deeper look into Bob’s story has been fascinating. Fans are eagerly anticipating the next episode, hoping for more of the story’s secrets to be revealed.
