In the fifth episode of “It: Welcome to Derry,” titled “Neibolt Street,” Pennywise the terrifying clown makes a comeback. Leroy moves his family to what he hopes is a secure location, while the town’s Native American elders search for ways to control the growing darkness. At the same time, the military investigates Neibolt Street, and the kids venture into the sewers. Inside, they discover Matty’s body, which leads to a startling revelation.
Why doesn’t Pennywise attack Lilly in It: Welcome to Derry Episode 5?
Pennywise avoids attacking Lilly because of a glowing dagger lying near her in the water – it seems to make him weaker. He stays back, so Lilly is able to grab the dagger herself.
The children went to the sewer, pausing at the entrance to take pills. Even though the pills made them feel strange and slowed them down, they pressed on, with Matty leading the way. They soon started hearing voices, and then discovered Matty’s dead body, which then morphed into Pennywise. Two more corpses appeared on a pole nearby. Pennywise continued to terrorize the kids, chasing after them. Most managed to escape, but Lilly was unfortunately left behind, alone to face the terrifying creature.
Hanlon and Pauly hear children screaming, and Hanlon instinctively prepares to fire his weapon. But Pauly quickly recognizes it’s Will and bravely steps in front of him, taking the bullet instead. Hanlon is immediately filled with regret. As Pauly lies dying, he tells Hanlon it’s alright and urges him to make his sacrifice meaningful. Leroy then carries Pauly’s body and tells the children to escape.
It broke my heart watching Lilly get separated and completely fall apart, just sobbing and feeling so alone. What was even worse was that nobody seemed to notice or try to help her! Then, that monster, Pennywise, found her and started being awful, taunting her about not being able to save Matty. It was truly terrifying when he transformed into her father, just to mess with her head. After switching back, he moved in to finish her off, but then he suddenly froze. I was so relieved to see that glowing dagger beside her – it was like it was protecting her! It stopped Pennywise in his tracks and seemed to really weaken him, saving Lilly from whatever he had planned.
