It: Welcome to Derry Already Faced the Problem Stranger Things Is Trying to Ignore

As much as Pennywise terrified everyone in IT, working on Season 1 brought a different kind of scare for those of us watching the young actors. Bill Skarsgård was genuinely frightening as IT, sure, but honestly, seeing those kids grow up so fast on set was a bit unsettling too. It’s a reminder that time really flies, especially when you’re working with child stars!

Barbara Muschietti, co-creator and executive producer of the upcoming *Welcome to Derry* series, recently told Entertainment Weekly that the 2023 Hollywood strikes halted production for nearly a year. When filming finally restarted, the crew immediately faced a surprising challenge: the young actors had all grown significantly during the break. “From the moment we started shooting, clothes didn’t fit, and they’d grown inches!” Muschietti explained. “We were just waiting for the strike to end so we could start filming right away.”

Most streaming shows featuring young actors don’t have to worry about them quickly becoming too old for their roles, but the recent Hollywood strikes created an unexpected problem for *Welcome to Derry*. As the *It* prequel is set to debut later this month, viewers will soon find out if the actors have grown noticeably during production, potentially disrupting the show’s realism.

Viewers are increasingly frustrated with streaming shows that take a long time to produce new seasons. This is especially true for shows like *Stranger Things* and *Percy Jackson*, where significant post-production and the aging of young actors create delays. It feels jarring when characters don’t age within the show’s timeline, even though years pass in real life while waiting for new episodes. While there’s not much that can be done about *Stranger Things* now, *Percy Jackson* is already ahead of schedule, with Season 3 in production months before Season 2 premieres on Disney+ this December.

Welcome to Derry Likely Won’t Have More Problems With Aging Child Stars

As a critic, I’m cautiously optimistic about *Welcome to Derry*. The good news is, barring any unforeseen circumstances like strikes or another pandemic, they’ve cleverly designed the show to avoid the tricky situation of aging child actors. Each season will focus on a new group of characters, delving into the history of Derry. Director Andy Muschietti has explained they’re drawing inspiration directly from the ‘interludes’ in Stephen King’s *It* novel – those sections that detail the town’s dark past. We’re talking about events like the Black Spot fire, the brutal Bradley Gang massacre from the 1930s, and the Kitchener Ironworks explosion. Essentially, each time Pennywise resurfaces, something terrible happens – and that’s what each season will explore.

Season one of *Welcome to Derry* takes place in 1962, 27 years before the events of Andy Muschietti’s *It*. According to Muschietti, each of the show’s three seasons will focus on a different, devastating event in Derry’s history. The story is being told in reverse chronological order, starting with 1962 in season one and ending with 1908 in season three.

Make sure to watch the premiere of *It: Welcome to Derry* on HBO and HBO Max on October 26th so the filmmakers—Andy and Barbara Muschiettis, along with Jason Fuchs—can finish this new installment in the *It* series from Warner Bros.
