Both The Terminator and The Matrix started as single films directed by groundbreaking filmmakers. While both franchises are hugely popular with fans, recent sequels haven’t been as successful as the originals. Because both stories center around a war between humans and intelligent machines, some fans even believe The Terminator could be seen as a story that takes place before the world of The Matrix.
James Cameron and Gale Ann Hurd created the dystopian world ruled by Skynet in the 1984 film The Terminator. While Lana and Lily Wachowski almost certainly watched The Terminator before making The Matrix in 1999, they didn’t intend it to be a continuation of that story. Though both films center around the conflict between humans and machines, they differ greatly in terms of visuals and storytelling. Despite challenges with sequels, both universes remain popular with fans. The idea that The Matrix is a sequel to The Terminator doesn’t reflect how the films were originally made, but this theory likely started with a legal dispute claiming the two stories were always meant to be connected.
A Lawsuit Claimed The Matrix and The Terminator Came From the Same Story
In 2003, Sophia Stewart filed a lawsuit against those involved with The Matrix and The Terminator—including the Wachowskis, James Cameron, and 20th Century Fox—claiming they stole ideas from her unpublished story, “The Third Eye.” She said she copyrighted the story in 1983, before The Terminator came out, and had sent treatments based on it to film studios. Stewart, who worked as a paralegal, represented herself in court. However, the case failed because she didn’t provide important evidence, such as copies of the movies themselves, to allow the court to compare them to her work.
Stewart stated she finished her story after Cameron completed the screenplay for The Terminator. She also claimed to have sent it to the Wachowskis after seeing an advertisement “in a national magazine” in 1986, but no such ad existed. In a 2005 interview with The Los Angeles Times, Stewart boldly declared herself a uniquely gifted writer, suggesting the Wachowskis, being less experienced, couldn’t have created a masterpiece like The Matrix.
Ultimately, Sophia Stewart told the court her story didn’t resemble either film. Her account gained traction online, with inaccurate reports claiming she’d won the lawsuit. However, the case was actually dismissed by the court. As Judge Morrow explained, the court had to rule in favor of the defendants because Stewart herself admitted there wasn’t a significant resemblance between her work and the films. Despite many artists and writers being exploited by the entertainment industry, Sophia Stewart is likely not one of them.
While Not Officially Connected, The Terminator and The Matrix Fit Together
Stewart’s lawsuit brought up a fascinating idea: that the universes of The Matrix and The Terminator might be linked. This connection was possibly discussed online, on early internet forums and movie boards, even before the lawsuit. Both stories share a common theme: humanity being overcome by technology, and small groups of rebels bravely, but often unsuccessfully, fighting back.
Looking at the larger story, the concept makes sense. In The Matrix, Morpheus explains to Neo that the details of the war against the machines have been forgotten. Regardless of what the machines do, humans always find a way to fight back. This means Neo is caught in a repeating pattern of controlled resistance, as we see in Matrix Reloaded. The Architect also tells us there have been seven previous versions of this 100-year cycle, but he doesn’t offer much information about the wars that happened before.
Considering what happens later in The Terminator, the Architect’s plan starts to make more sense. The war between humans and machines is a repeating cycle, fought both in the past and present. No matter how events change, humanity will always struggle until it either triumphs or is destroyed. While the Matrix keeps most people content, it can’t control everyone. The Architect’s cycle keeps those who resist the Matrix subdued, preventing them from ever becoming strong enough to win.
The Matrix Movies Already Included a Prequel Fans May Have Missed
Released directly to video, The Animatrix featured nine animated short films. Among them, a two-part story called “The Second Renaissance” acts as a prequel, presented as a historical account from the machines’ perspective. It details how androids initially served humans, but in 2090, one named B1-66ER became self-aware and killed humans in self-defense. When legally deemed property, the android was executed, sparking a robot rebellion that unexpectedly drew humans to their side. Ultimately, the world’s governments united to destroy them.
Zero One, a successful city built by humans and machines working together, was founded as a place of peace. The machines once again tried to live peacefully with people, even asking the United Nations for help. Only after Zero One was attacked with nuclear weapons did the machines resort to war. Initially, it looked like humans would win, similar to the story in The Terminator. But Zero One continued to develop, and the war began to shift. A key turning point came when the remaining human residents volunteered to work with the machines, using a new, advanced energy source.
With humanity on the brink of extinction, they ultimately surrendered, and the war concluded with the destruction of New York City by a nuclear blast. But the fighting had already ravaged the Earth, including the unintended consequence of a human weapon – self-replicating nanites designed to block the sun. This left the machines with no choice but to use humans as a power source. As seen in the movies, the Matrix was created to keep people from realizing the terrible truth about their situation.
Both the Terminator and Matrix Universes Show a Cycle of Conflict, but the Big Difference Is Time Travel
Despite the recent official prequel story, it’s still possible The Terminator could actually be a prequel to The Matrix because of time travel. Each Terminator sent back in time creates the potential for humanity to alter its future. The story where Skynet is defeated and replaced by a new AI called Legion suggests that the rise of intelligent machines is unavoidable.
Imagine a different future where machines don’t instantly try to destroy humanity. In this timeline, humans built Skynet and Legion to fight wars, so their quick attacks make sense. The machines shown in “The Second Renaissance” were originally designed to help and protect people – they aren’t inherently hostile. And unlike in The Terminator, there are people who actually support the machines, making the resistance even more strained and desperate.
Even though there are countless ways the world of The Terminator could have existed, it could still lead to the events of The Matrix. Because the past can’t be altered, the world we see in The Matrix represents the only possible outcome. Considering the time-traveling machines and multiple versions of the Matrix in both stories, their conflict seems to repeat endlessly. The idea that The Terminator is actually a prequel to The Matrix might sound strange, but it’s not entirely impossible, even though it originated with a questionable legal claim.
As a long-time fan, it’s been tough seeing the recent Matrix and Terminator movies fall flat. Both franchises seem stuck right now. There was talk of a fifth Matrix film with Drew Goddard back in 2024, and a potential new Terminator in 2025, but we haven’t seen much movement on either. It’s frustrating because the originals were so groundbreaking! It feels like every sequel has struggled to live up to that initial magic. Honestly, I’m hoping this fan theory about a connection between the two universes will give the studios some fresh ideas and get these stories back on track. Maybe it’s what they need to finally deliver something truly exciting again.
