As a movie buff, I can’t help but feel a wave of sunshine watching the contestants on Bachelor in Paradise this week, as they’ve truly revitalized this reality dating spinoff. Yet, while we eagerly wait for its broadcast on the 2025 TV lineup, there seems to be some turbulence brewing behind the scenes within the franchise. The lead of The Golden Bachelor Season 2, Mel Owens, has stirred controversy after expressing his reluctance towards dating women over 60. Though a past cast member has defended him, I must admit, I’m left questioning the upcoming season.
Kathy Swarts Seems Unconcerned With The Golden Bachelor’s Comments
Kathy Swarts gained popularity during Gerry Turner’s season of “The Golden Bachelor,” notably for telling Theresa Nist to be quiet on one occasion, and forging a bond with Susan Noles who resembled Caitlyn Jenner. Following her appearance in “Bachelor in Paradise” Season 10, Swarts responded to Mel Owens’ statement about preferring to date women aged between 45 and 60, sharing her thoughts on the matter with Entertainment Weekly.
If Mel Owens were to meet me, given that I’m over 70 years old, I believe he would be taken aback, perhaps saying something like, “Wow, I didn’t realize someone could be so vibrant past 60, let alone 70.” I am confident he will continue to thrive.
Isn’t it striking how confident Kathy Swarts appears to be? It seems as though she believes that many women over 60 possess qualities that Mel Owens might find appealing during The Golden Bachelor Season 2.
In June, the ex-NFL star appeared on a podcast and mentioned that he had informed the producers of ‘The Bachelor’ that he favored dating females under sixty years old and intended to eliminate any women beyond that age. However, Kathy Swarts dismissed these remarks by carrying on with her conversation.
From what I gather, Mel seems to be on the hunt for romance, and he might have blurted out something impulsively that perhaps wasn’t meant sincerely. I’m excited about the upcoming season, it looks promising. However, if by any chance I manage to win him over, then I guess we can call it a wrap!
I understand the perspective of The Golden Bachelor alum, but I must admit I harbor some doubts regarding the future events.
Why I’m Still Wary Of The Golden Bachelor Season 2
It’s possible that Mel Owens might alter his stance on dating women over 60 once he encounters the contestants during filming this summer, with the season set to air in the fall. However, for many viewers like myself, this development could potentially diminish the enthusiasm surrounding the Golden spinoffs, as they have thus far emphasized embracing life vigorously at any age.
Viewers of Bachelor Nation are often doubtful that these on-screen relationships last, given the history of the show. For instance, the split between Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist, who divorced just three months into their marriage, was met with significant criticism. Similarly, Grant Ellis from The Bachelor ended his engagement to Juliana Pasquarosa mere three months after the season concluded. More recently, even before the finale aired, the most recent Bachelorette, Jenn Tran, parted ways with her fiancé.

I’m not entirely convinced that The Golden Bachelor Season 2 is structured to deliver the triumphant outcome that Bachelor Nation craves. Nevertheless, Gerry Turner suggested Mel Owens to maintain an open perspective about the women selected for his season, and I will make an effort to adopt a similar approach towards the forthcoming spinoff.
A specific air date hasn’t been announced yet, but don’t miss out on seeing some beloved Golden contestants on “Bachelor in Paradise,” airing every Monday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. If you can’t watch live, catch up the next day with a Hulu subscription!
