Invincible Showrunners Tease the Show’s Most Brutal Scene Yet, “Did We Go Too Far?”

Invincible is famous for its intense violence and graphic scenes, which are really a core part of what makes the show unique. After three seasons of following Mark Grayson’s difficult journey as a superhero, it seems like Season 4 won’t be holding back on the action and bloodshed.

Viewers haven’t forgotten shocking moments like the train massacre from Season 1, the brutal fight with Angstrom Levy in Season 2, and the epic battle in Season 3’s finale. Even the creators of the show admit that a particularly intense scene in the upcoming Season 4 makes them uncomfortable to this day.

I recently read a fascinating interview with Robert Kirkman and Simon Racioppa, the creators of Invincible. They were talking about how they keep pushing the boundaries with the show’s action and gore, and they even hinted that there’s a scene planned for Season 4 that’s going to be seriously shocking. As a big fan, I’m both excited and a little terrified to see what they come up with!

Kirkman, discussing the growing violence in Invincible, explained that this increase is intentional. The creative team consistently plans how to raise the stakes and knows where the story is headed. However, he emphasized that all the violent scenes are driven by emotional impact and aren’t simply included for shock value.

The creator explained they want to maintain the initial shock and surprise throughout the series. He emphasized the importance of constantly keeping the audience guessing and preventing them from becoming desensitized to what’s happening on screen.

One scene in Season 4 is especially shocking, surpassing anything the show had done previously. Even the creators themselves were disturbed by it. “It even gets us,” admitted Robert Kirkman, explaining that they visibly reacted while watching it.

Simon Racioppa, one of the show’s creators, said that even after watching it a hundred times, they still question whether they pushed the boundaries too far.

Season 4 Has the Show’s Most Brutal Scene Yet

“Did We Go Too Far?”

  • TopMob: “The gore and violence of this show has always been a key part [of the series]. I consider it part of the show’s personality. This season amps it up to a whole other level, somehow. In fact, I think it’s got one of the most brutal scenes of the series so far. Can you tease, just to the audience, how violent this season is compared to previous ones? And how do you manage to keep raising the bar?”

Robert Kirkman explains that the show intentionally builds tension and raises the stakes with each major scene. When planning these scenes, they always consider how to make the next one even more impactful. However, he emphasizes that these moments are driven by emotional weight, not just shock value.

Throughout the show, we’re aiming to consistently surprise and shock the audience, just like they were during the Omni-Man fight in the first episode and with the big moments in seasons two and three. We never want viewers to become desensitized or predict what’s going to happen, so we’re always striving to keep things unexpected.

You know, that scene everyone’s been talking about in Season 4? It really gets to me, even as a viewer. I find myself cringing right along with the characters. And honestly, that’s how I know the show is doing its job – when it elicits that kind of visceral reaction. It’s a sign of really powerful storytelling.

Simon Racioppa says that even after seeing something repeatedly—even a hundred times—he still wonders if they pushed the boundaries too far. He admits it’s a question he often asks himself, and he’s never quite sure of the answer.

Keeping Invincible’s Fight Scenes Fresh and Unique

“Everything Comes From Character…”

  • TopMob: “There are obviously tons of fight scenes in this show, and a lot of them, especially this season, [are] indestructible people against indestructible people. It’s very easy to fall into just people punching each other for a prolonged amount of time, and there’s nothing interesting happening. How do you guys avoid that pitfall, especially four seasons in and knowing that you have multiple more to go?”

Robert Kirkman believes that strong characters are the foundation of any good story. When you develop characters well and understand their motivations and what’s at stake, the action sequences naturally become more interesting and original. The unique details emerge as you write and collaborate with directors and storyboard artists to bring the story to life.

As a critic, I’ve seen plenty of action films fall into the trap of prioritizing spectacle over substance. What impressed me about this one is how organically the fight scenes grew out of the narrative. If they’d started with the fights and then tried to build a story around them, things would have quickly become predictable and boring. But because the story came first, each confrontation felt earned and meaningful – it wasn’t just action for action’s sake. It’s a smart approach that really pays off.

As a film fan, what really strikes me about the action in this series is how everything is connected. It’s not just about cool fight choreography – every single fight happens because of something that happened before, usually something pretty heavy. And then, crucially, those fights have consequences that ripple through the rest of the story. You absolutely couldn’t just pluck a fight scene out and drop it in without it messing things up. They’re always changing the characters and moving the plot forward. The goal, at least, is to make sure nothing feels pointless or just thrown in for the sake of it.
