The recent episode of Invincible, titled “Give Us a Moment,” featured the introduction of Tech Jacket. However, his portrayal differed considerably from the version fans of the comic books are familiar with. While the show has made changes to various characters, Tech Jacket’s transformation is among the most substantial.
Beyond changing the character’s gender from Zack to Zoe, Tech Jacket was also unexpectedly portrayed as younger than her age in the story. This has puzzled many fans, and a popular theory suggests this change could have significant implications for the overall narrative.
How Old Is Tech Jacket in the Invincible TV Show Vs. Comics
It’s tricky to create a precise timeline for events and ages in the Invincible universe, as with many comic books. As a starting point, Mark Grayson was 17 years old and a senior in high school when he first developed his superpowers, both in the original comic and the animated show.
By the time Mark’s father and the Coalition of Planets brought him into the Viltrumite War, he was nearly 20 years old. He wasn’t the only one recruited, though – Allen and Nolan also asked Tech Jacket to fight alongside them.

Zack was a high school student when he first became a superhero, a few months before the start of Invincible. Unlike the main character, Mark, we never saw Zack finish school. It’s likely he was between 14 and 17 years old when he received the Tech Jacket. Later stories revealed that he eventually dropped out of community college, continuing to work as Tech Jacket for several years.
Ultimately, Tech Jacket should be around the same age as Mark in the comics, possibly 18. This is because he would likely start and then leave college shortly after the war with Viltrum concluded.

Throughout this story arc, Mark Grayson and Zack Thompson share a striking resemblance, as seen in the panels above – Tech Jacket essentially looks like a thinner, less polished version of Invincible. This similarity is highlighted even when Mark is unconscious after his fight with Conquest, as he grows a beard while in a coma, mirroring Zack’s appearance.
One thing that’s noticeable is how much younger the show portrays Zoe Thompson as compared to the original Tech Knight character. It’s clear she’s much younger than she should be – not just because of her physical stature, but also from details like her father correcting her for using bad language.

The show cleverly established Zoe’s age by revealing she’s the same height as Oliver, who visibly aged between seasons and is now around 14 or 15. This suggests Zoe can’t be more than four years younger than her comic book version, but the reason for this limitation remains unclear.
Be warned: The following contains significant spoilers for the Invincible comic books and may reveal events that happen later in the animated series.
Why Age Down Zoe’s Tech Jacket?
Some fans believe the show aged down the character Zoe to create a romantic connection with Oliver, and that this is also why her gender was changed. They point to a similar situation in ‘Shrinking Rae,’ where the character began dating Rex Splode before his heroic death.
The main problem with this plan is that Oliver ages much faster than Zoe. Within a year, he’d be a grown adult, but Zoe would still be a child, which would create a very strange dynamic.

Plus, if the show doesn’t have any big surprises planned, Oliver already has a romantic partner in the comic books: an alien shrimp named Haluma. The comics even portray him feeling that people on Earth haven’t helped him, but Haluma truly understands and supports him.
It’s hoped that Zoe and Oliver will stay just friends throughout the show, even with everything that’s been changing and the strange things happening.
