I’m Excited About The Latest Star Trek Movie News, But Have One Big Request As A Longtime Fan

You’ve probably heard this news before, but another Star Trek movie is in development. It’s been a long time coming – Paramount has explored several options, including continuing the Kelvin timeline and even rebooting the origins of Starfleet, but we’re still waiting for a new Trek film to arrive in cinemas, almost ten years after Star Trek Beyond.

David Ellison, the new CEO of Paramount Skydance, is committed to reviving the film franchise and has decided to move away from continuing the Kelvin timeline storyline. He’s hired Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley to develop a completely new movie. While it’s unclear what their vision will be, I’m hoping they’ll set the story during the era of The Next Generation.

I Would Love The New Star Trek Movie To Be Set In The TNG Era

With so many different time periods in Star Trek to choose from for a new movie, most of the TV shows and films have taken place in just two of them. I’d really like the next movie to be set during the years when Jean-Luc Picard commanded the Enterprise – the era known as The Next Generation.

Besides the surprising moments in The Next Generation, Voyager gave us some of the most imaginative stories in Star Trek, and Deep Space Nine featured a full-scale war. This era of the franchise – also revisited in Prodigy, Lower Decks, and Picard – is hugely popular, and fans are still eager for new adventures and stories set during this time.

It might be difficult to make sense of everything that’s happened in the Star Trek universe so far. However, other shows have successfully handled similar situations, and this new story is relatively short – only a couple of hours long. There’s still a lot of unexplored space for a new crew to adventure in without running into established captains like Picard, Janeway, and Sisko. And if they did manage to include a cameo from one of those actors, that would be a great way to hint at future stories!

While Star Trek’s Kelvin Films Were Fun, We’ve Had So Much Of The TOS Era Lately

I understand many Star Trek fans want to see more stories set during the original series era, but let me explain why we’re exploring other options. The last three Star Trek movies already revisited that time period, even with the alternate timeline. Plus, we’re currently filming the fourth and final season of Strange New Worlds, which will bring that fantastic story arc to a satisfying conclusion.

We currently have a lot of great content set in the original Star Trek timeline, and I’d be disappointed if that was overshadowed by a new movie also taking place in that era. Strange New Worlds has been a highlight for fans for years, and it would be unfair to diminish its success simply to attract a wider audience.

It might seem a little inconsistent that I’m focusing on the original Star Trek era so soon after mentioning shows connected to The Next Generation. However, none of those Next Generationera shows are currently on the air, and Paramount hasn’t announced any plans to revisit that timeline. A movie set during The Next Generation*’s time would be a simple way to satisfy dedicated fans, and it could also attract a broader audience – there’s no reason it couldn’t.

There’s Still So Much Untapped Potential In The TNG Era For Creatives To Explore

Even though we know a lot about Star Trek: The Next Generation, there’s still plenty left to discover. Just look at how many new stories are being told in comic books, and how creatively this universe can be expanded.

I’ve always been fascinated by the Q Continuum. It might be a deep cut for viewers unfamiliar with Star Trek, but it highlights how much of the show’s alien origins remain unexplored, even for species we’ve seen quite a bit of.

A Star Trek movie doesn’t always need a universe-ending crisis to feel important. A smaller, focused story – like a starship and crew struggling to survive against the Borg – could be just as exciting and make a fantastic film. Stories like that would be welcome and wouldn’t contradict what’s already been established in Star Trek history.

Bonus Request: Please Don’t Create Another Timeline

Could I ask one more thing? Please don’t make a Star Trek movie that ignores both the original and reboot timelines. I know multiverses are popular right now, but sometimes, less is more.

Star Trek’s Jonathan Frakes Breaks Silence On The Franchise’s New Movie, And One Thing Surprises Me

Over the last ten years, the people making new Star Trek stories have worked hard to connect everything together and find clever ways to link new events to the existing history. They haven’t figured out a simple way for characters to travel between the different timelines yet, but I think that’s because they’re careful not to undo what’s been established before.

Honestly, what worries me most about the new Star Trek movie is the possibility of it losing touch with everything we love about the franchise. I’m totally open to fresh stories, characters, and even new alien species! But I really don’t want a reboot that pretends the previous shows and movies never happened. Star Trek clearly still means a lot to people – just look at how well it’s doing on streaming! – and I’m hoping the filmmakers will work with, or at least get advice from, the people who helped build this universe in the first place. It feels important to honor that legacy.

With a new year just around the corner, many of us are hoping to finally get some real news about the next Star Trek movie in 2026. I’m excited to see what happens, and I hope other fans will be too once the plans are revealed.
