With fall officially underway and scary movie news everywhere, audiences are eager for a good slasher film. One of the most anticipated releases this season is Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of *Frankenstein*, the classic Mary Shelley novel. Many consider it a must-see thriller, but one of the actors hints it might surprise viewers with an unexpected approach.
Ever since the exciting trailer for the new *Frankenstein* film was released, anticipation has been building for this take on the classic story, directed by an Academy Award winner. Mia Goth, who plays Elizabeth Lavenza, recently discussed the director’s vision at the film’s Los Angeles premiere with Deadline. She explained that neither she nor the director intend the movie to be simply frightening. Instead, they see it as a complex story about family, and a project the director has been passionate about for many years.
Guillermo describes the film as a deeply personal family drama, focusing on the complex relationships between fathers and sons, and themes of forgiveness, understanding, and ultimately, finding redemption. He believes audiences will be surprised by its emotional impact, noting it’s a story he’s carried with him since childhood, having first conceived of it when he was just ten years old.
I might be in the minority, but I’m really excited about the upcoming remake because it seems to offer a fresh and thoughtful interpretation of the original story. The 1818 novel focused more on the social issues surrounding an outcast than on horror, so I’m curious to see how this new adaptation approaches those themes. Knowing that Guillermo del Toro’s version takes a different path than previous adaptations doesn’t really surprise me.
I’m a bit surprised by this, especially hearing it described as a father-son story. However, the recent additions to this well-known horror series often take creative risks with both violence and character relationships. It will be interesting to see how the director approaches this classic story. To be honest, I’m going to watch it regardless, as I’ve always been a fan of *Frankenstein* and the other monsters.

Guillermo Del Toro Calls Jacob Elordi’s Frankenstein Monster ‘Beautiful’, And I’m So Intrigued
I’m honestly not sure what to expect from this new take on *Frankenstein* – it’s being described as a family drama, not a horror movie! It’s coming to some theaters on October 17th, but if you miss it there, don’t worry – it’ll be available on Netflix starting November 7th, 2025. I’m already making sure my subscription is up to date so I can check out Guillermo del Toro’s version as soon as it drops!
