As a longtime fan, I’ve seen a lot of people come and go with The Walking Dead. It’s been on the air for fifteen years now, and it’s totally understandable that not everyone’s still watching. I remember a lot of folks checked out during the whole Negan storyline, or when Rick Grimes—Andrew Lincoln—left in season nine. Some stuck it out until the very end of the original series, but then weren’t interested in following all the spin-offs. It’s a long journey, and people have different limits!
Okay, so if you’ve been away from The Walking Dead for a while, you’ve missed some seriously big stuff – origins of the virus finally being revealed, Daryl doing something completely unexpected, and a really emotional Rick and Michonne reunion. But honestly? All of that pales in comparison to a recent twist that’s just blown my mind, and I suspect a lot of you haven’t even heard about it yet.
Humanity Only Has 14 Years Left In The Walking Dead
In The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, a sequel focusing on Rick and Michonne, it’s revealed that Andrew Lincoln’s character, Rick, ended up in a heavily controlled community called the Civic Republic, located in Philadelphia. He’d become a well-respected leader within their military force, known as the CRM.
If you stopped watching The Walking Dead before it ended, the CRM was the organization operating the helicopters and sending out the “A” and “B” signals. They were also secretly allied with Jadis and her group of Scavengers.
Once Rick earned Major General Beale’s complete confidence, he received the “Echelon Briefing,” a highly classified report normally only given to top-level officers. The most critical piece of information revealed was that the Civic Republic’s scientists predicted humanity had, at best, only 14 years left to live.
Before Judith grows up, the world of The Walking Dead will likely see humanity wiped out by things like growing walker herds, disease, and starvation. Building communities won’t be enough to stop it. The CRM tried to ensure their own survival by eliminating other groups, but even their leader, Beale, acknowledged that long-term success wasn’t guaranteed.
The latest development in The Walking Dead is surprisingly dark, showing that even safe havens like Alexandria and the Commonwealth offer no lasting peace unless a cure for the outbreak is discovered.
Will The Walking Dead Ever Address The 14-Year Problem?
Currently, The Walking Dead universe includes two spinoff shows: Dead City, which follows Negan and Maggie, and Daryl Dixon, starring Daryl and Carol. These shows take place in different locations and tell separate stories from the original series, meaning they probably won’t address the mystery revealed to Rick about a problem that has existed for 14 years.
If this problem is ever resolved, it will likely be in the next season of The One Who Lives or through a possible crossover with The Walking Dead. Both of these ideas have been discussed, but haven’t been officially confirmed.
It’s reasonable to think Rick Grimes would still be haunted by the information from the Echelon Briefing when he returned home in the finale of The One Who Lives. While the CRM’s approach was flawed, the underlying issue their scientists discovered hasn’t disappeared.
Rick Grimes’s main hope lies in discovering a cure for the zombie virus, a storyline explored in the often-overlooked spinoff series, World Beyond. Season two of that show revealed the French scientists who created the virus, and hinted they may have been in the United States when the outbreak began. Meanwhile, the main characters in World Beyond started researching a potential solution – a fungus that could eliminate large numbers of zombies.
To truly wrap up the story of The Walking Dead and offer a satisfying conclusion, it seems Rick Grimes should revisit the mysteries introduced in the spin-off series, World Beyond.
