Be warned – spoilers ahead! Sam Raimi’s latest film, Send Help, is a return to classic horror and is receiving some of the highest ratings of his career. It’s a thrilling, funny, and often shocking movie that clearly showcases Raimi’s unique style, filled with familiar touches and camera work from throughout his career, reminding everyone why he’s a major voice in the horror genre.
Although the film’s contemporary setting and tropical location don’t immediately recall Sam Raimi’s earlier films like The Evil Dead or Drag Me to Hell, certain scenes definitely echo his signature style. The movie also includes moments that seem inspired by a film Raimi produced, but didn’t direct or write.
Don’t Move Matches Send Help’s Captive Victim/Killer Energy
Netflix subscribers can now watch the thriller Don’t Move. The film features Kelsey Asbille (from Yellowstone) as a mother dealing with loss who becomes the target of a serial killer. He’s injected her with a drug that causes paralysis, and she must find a way to escape as her body weakens. Starring Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story), the movie is a tense and gripping fight for survival, full of claustrophobic and suspenseful scenes.
Although Send Help doesn’t feature a serial killer, the situation facing Dylan O’Brien’s character, Bradley, mirrors that of being trapped—not within his own body, but on a remote island after a plane crash with Rachel McAdams’ Linda Liddle. Linda doesn’t initially intend to harm Bradley, but her resourcefulness and ability to survive in the wilderness quickly establish an uneven power dynamic, making her the dominant figure and him the more vulnerable one.
The tension finally explodes when it’s revealed Linda has been holding Bradley captive on the island, deceiving and controlling him from nearly the beginning. Their disagreement escalates into a brutal fight for survival, mirroring the intense climax of Don’t Move, where Iris, played by Asbille, struggles against both a paralyzing substance and the evil plans of whoever is holding her.
Don’t Move May Have Inspired Scenes In Send Help
While not central to the main story, Send Help includes a scene strikingly similar to one from Don’t Move. In an attempt to scare Bradley, Linda forces him to eat a toxic octopus that paralyzes him. What follows is a particularly disturbing and elaborate scare – complete with a rat and a strange conversation about repairing dogs – that feels distinctly like something a serial killer would do.
Both Don’t Move and Send Help feature captors killing people to maintain control and avoid being caught. The intense, violent final confrontation between Linda and Bradley in Send Help feels very similar to the showdown between Iris and Richard in Don’t Move – it’s filled with tension, bloodshed, and brutality.
It’s obvious Raimi drew inspiration from his work on Don’t Move for his latest film, taking the main idea and using it in a few standout scenes. If you liked Send Help, you’ll probably enjoy this fast-paced, suspenseful Netflix thriller when you have about an hour and a half to watch.
