Luckily, another fantasy show is being developed that might appeal to those, especially adults, who are unhappy with the direction of the Harry Potter franchise.

HBO is developing a TV show based on the popular fantasy game Baldur’s Gate 3. The game, created by Larian Studios, won numerous awards in 2023. The project is being led by Craig Mazin, who also co-created HBO’s The Last of Us.

Although Harry Potter and Baldur’s Gate seem very different, both are based on popular stories and take place in magical fantasy worlds. But for those older fans looking for another fantasy world to explore, Baldur’s Gate 3 could be a great option.

The next Baldur’s Gate game is still quite a ways off – it won’t launch until after Neil Druckmann finishes working on Season 3 of The Last of Us. That means it’ll likely be several years after the new Harry Potter series starts, but it’s still something exciting to look forward to.

As a huge fan of both gaming and TV, I’m really excited about the Baldur’s Gate 3 series! What I find particularly cool is that it’s not just a retelling of the game’s story. Like Fallout proved, they’re going to continue the adventures of these characters after the game ends. It’s awesome because it means they aren’t locked into one specific storyline – since the game itself changes so much depending on your choices, the series can really go anywhere!

Unlike Harry Potter, Baldur’s Gate provides more opportunities for diverse representation and acceptance. Baldur’s Gate 3 has been especially popular with the LGBTQIA+ community, offering options for queer relationships and including non-binary and transgender characters. While the Baldur’s Gate TV adaptation can continue this inclusivity, Harry Potter is limited by J.K. Rowling’s publicly known views on these topics.
