Iconic Superman Villain Getting Origin Retcon From Kevin Smith

Superman had a major resurgence in 2025 thanks to new comics and the DC Universe film, and the momentum is continuing into 2026. DC Comics has announced a fresh origin story for one of Superman’s most iconic enemies, which will be told in a four-part comic series co-written by filmmaker and comic book writer Kevin Smith.

The upcoming miniseries, titled Bizarro: Year None, will focus on the backwards counterpart of Superman. Because Bizarro has appeared in many different forms in comics and other media, it’s often been unclear exactly who or what he is.

Bizarro started as a flawed copy of Superman, intending to do good but consistently causing problems. He used the same faulty cloning technology that created him to build his own world, a cube-shaped planet called Htrae, often known as Bizarro World. Over time, stories have placed Bizarro World as either an alternate Earth called Earth-29 or Earth-0. Some versions of Bizarro were created by Lex Luthor as attempts to clone and control Superman. Depending on the story, Bizarro could be intentionally villainous – the opposite of Superman in every way – or simply naive and easily manipulated into causing harm.

How Bizarro: Year None will revamp the Superman villain

A new comic book series called Bizarro will delve into the complex backstory of the character with a complicated new origin story. The series is being co-written by Kevin Smith and Eric Carrasco, who also wrote Justice League vs. the Fatal Five. Artist Nick Pitarra will provide the main artwork and cover, with variant covers by Frank Quitely and Ibrahim Moustafa also available in the first issue.

Okay, so I’m really excited about this new series! It’s going to center around Jimmy Olsen and Perry White, and they stumble onto a story that takes them all the way into space. They end up in this really weird, alternate version of Metropolis – it’s like, is it another planet? Another dimension? Who knows! And of course, they run into Bizarro. The big question is, what’s his deal? Is he just a super-fan gone wrong, some random accident that created a villain, or just a regular guy with a strange story? I’m hooked already!

Bizarro: Year None #1 will arrive in comic shops everywhere on April 1, 2026.
