Iconic Jobs Final Fantasy 14 Needs To Add

The new Evercold expansion for Final Fantasy XIV will introduce two completely original jobs. The game director has confirmed these aren’t classes seen in any previous Final Fantasy game, and players are already discussing how the new tank and damage-dealing roles will function.

Final Fantasy 14 often introduces job classes that are new to the series, like the Reaper in Endwalker and the Viper coming in Dawntrail. While these fresh ideas are welcome, many fantastic job concepts from past Final Fantasy games haven’t made it into Eorzea yet. If the game remains popular, they might eventually be added, but with the current pace of new class releases, fans could be waiting a while.

Mystic Knight Should Have Been Added to FF XIV Long Ago

Creating a unique sword-wielding character class is challenging, especially in a game like Final Fantasy 14 where so many similar classes already exist. Interestingly, the Mystic Knight from Final Fantasy 5 offers a fresh take on this concept and hasn’t been included in Final Fantasy 14 yet.

The Mystic Knight class uses a skill called Spellblade, which boosts sword attack damage by channeling black magic. This ability to change an attack’s properties based on the magic used feels perfect for Final Fantasy 14, but it’s only been available temporarily in limited-time events and hasn’t become a standard ability for players.

The Gun Mage Can Obliterate Foes With Magical Bullets

In Final Fantasy 14, ranged damage dealers are divided into those who use magical attacks and those who use physical attacks. The Machinist is the primary job that focuses on physical ranged damage, using guns to fight enemies – specifically, soldiers from the Garlean Empire.

This class is a ranged damage dealer specializing in firearms. They excel at applying harmful effects and weakening enemies. They can also deal extra damage by carefully studying opponents and exploiting their weaknesses, though this takes time to set up before combat begins.

The Viking Would Have Been Ideal For Evercold

The first trailer for Evercold suggests the game’s world will draw heavily from Norse mythology, an idea hinted at during the Endwalker expansion. Many players hoped this would be a good opportunity to introduce a new tank class, but it appears Evercold will only add new character classes that aren’t tanks.

In Final Fantasy 3, the Viking character was designed to draw enemy attacks, protecting more vulnerable teammates so they could cast spells safely. Essentially, the Viking was the first Final Fantasy Tank – a character meant to absorb damage. It’s odd that the Viking hasn’t returned in later games. While some suggest the developers avoid using real-world titles for jobs, they did include the Samurai class in Stormblood, so that explanation doesn’t quite fit.

The Void Knight Can Bring Celes’ Might To Final Fantasy 14

Unlike some other games in the series, Final Fantasy 6 didn’t use a job system. Instead, each character had a special ability, and many of these abilities had appeared in earlier Final Fantasy titles. For example, Celes could absorb magic attacks with her unique ‘Runic’ ability, making those attacks ineffective, but this wasn’t linked to any particular job class.

Fortunately, a hero who despises Chaos had a solution. In Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, the character Jack has a class called the Void Knight, which focuses on defense and absorbs enemy attacks using special abilities. This would be a fantastic addition as a new Tank job in the game, particularly if Jack were to appear in a crossover event, offering a great way to integrate his abilities.

Lady Luck Will Bring Some Class To Eorzea

Many strong attacks in the Final Fantasy series rely heavily on luck. Characters like Cait Sith in Final Fantasy 7 and Setzer in Final Fantasy 6 have abilities that can instantly defeat enemies – or even your own party – thanks to the random outcome of spinning slot machines.

It’s a bit unexpected that Final Fantasy 14 hasn’t included a class based on chance, like a ‘Gambler,’ or even the Lady Luck Dressphere from Final Fantasy 10-2. Lady Luck’s gameplay, which involves dice rolls and slot machines to attack and influence enemies, might not appeal to players focused solely on maximizing damage, but it could add a lot of enjoyment to solo play, particularly since so much of the game is now doable with Trusts (AI companions).

The Geomancers Can Be The Druids Of Eorzea

Geomancers are a recurring class in the Final Fantasy series, known for harnessing the earth’s power to fight. Their magic adapts to the surrounding environment. While this connection to the land is present in most Final Fantasy games, Final Fantasy Tactics takes it further, allowing spells to change based on the specific tile a character occupies, offering greater variety.

The game Final Fantasy 14 could introduce a new class, potentially called Druid, based on the Geomancer concept. This class would harness the power of nature for both healing and defense, and could also attack enemies by manipulating the weather. Interestingly, these weather effects could change based on the time of day or the specific environment within each dungeon.

The Oracle Can Be A New Holy Harmer

Many fans of the Final Fantasy series remember the Oracle class from Final Fantasy Tactics, where it started as a version of the White Mage and focused on weakening enemies with status effects. In Final Fantasy 14, this idea became the Astrologian, a Healer who uses cards to strengthen their teammates. The Astrologian has undergone significant changes with each new expansion of Final Fantasy 14.

Let’s bring back the Oracle job, reimagined with a focus on powerful status effects, damaging debuffs, and high damage output – all without needing to heal. We could create a compelling storyline for this job through quests, presenting Oracles as a breakaway group from the Astrologian class.

Necromancer Can Give The Warrior Of Light A Taste Of Dark Magic

Necromancers are frequently found as playable characters in Western role-playing games, like the Wizard class in Baldur’s Gate 3 or as the Lich in Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. However, they’ve only been playable once in the Final Fantasy series – as a post-game job added to Final Fantasy 5 Advance.

These characters primarily use elemental magic to inflict damage. The Necromancer would specialize in applying harmful status effects and summoning the undead to attack. The Warrior of Light might learn about the Necromancer’s abilities while traveling the multiverse, perhaps discovering a desolate world brimming with forgotten magical knowledge that could be useful against future enemies.

The Puppeteer Can Fulfill The Naruto Fantasies Of The Final Fantasy Fanbase

It’s really disappointing that this game hasn’t been updated like A Realm Reborn to meet today’s gaming standards, because it has a lot of great concepts that deserve to be experienced.

The Puppeteer is a really interesting job from Final Fantasy 11 – you battle with a doll you can fully customize. While Puppeteers can fight directly, the core of the job is building and programming your puppet with different abilities based on the parts you choose. Final Fantasy 14 could really use more jobs that feel unique, and the Puppeteer would be a perfect addition. It’s surprising we haven’t seen it yet, especially considering the game is currently highlighting Final Fantasy 11 through the Dawntrail raid content.

The Mime Could Be The Warrior Of Light’s Ultimate Form

It’s tricky to add new jobs to Final Fantasy 14 because our character, the Warrior of Light, is already a legendary hero who has saved the world many times and fought against incredibly powerful enemies. Introducing a job like the Onion Knight or Squire feels out of place for someone at that level of power and experience.

The Mime job is unique and powerful because it lets a character instantly repeat a previous action without spending resources. In Final Fantasy 14, this means a Mime can copy the powerful finishing moves of other players, skipping the setup and still getting the full benefit. Alternatively, a Mime can learn a wide range of abilities from other jobs, making it incredibly versatile and customizable. Some players consider the Mime the ultimate job, representing the Warrior of Light mastering the skills of all their companions.
