Fans recently got an update on a sequel to the classic ‘90s action film starring Brendan Fraser. The Mummy movies are an action-packed series that updated Universal Pictures’ original 1932 film. It did so by combining exciting storylines with humor and memorable characters, particularly Fraser’s leading performance.
The Mummy introduced audiences to Brendan Fraser as Rick O’Connell and Rachel Weisz as Evelyn Carnahan, who join forces on an adventure to locate the legendary city of Hamunaptra. The Mummy didn’t just revive the classic monster movie style; it also launched Fraser to fame and was a huge hit in theaters. Released on May 4, 1999, The Mummy led to two follow-up films and an entirely new series of movies. Because the ’90s film became so popular, many people are now asking if another sequel might be made.
According to entertainment source Daniel Richtman, Universal Pictures is exploring the possibility of making another The Mummy movie, and they want Brendan Fraser to reprise his role. The The Mummy series with Fraser consists of three films: the original, 2001’s The Mummy Returns, and 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, which completed the trilogy.
According to Deadline, a fresh take on The Mummy, focusing on horror and the supernatural, is in development with Blumhouse, New Line, and Atomic Monster (from James Wan). This new film appears to be a separate project from Universal Pictures’ other plans, largely because of the possibility of Brendan Fraser reprising his role.
As a huge cinema fan, I remember being thrilled when The Mummy Returns brought back Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz for another adventure! It was a real race against time, set in Egypt, as they tried to stop the incredibly dangerous Scorpion King – and get this, it was Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s very first movie role! This sequel really transformed Rick O’Connell; he went from just a treasure hunter to a proper hero, destined to defeat the Scorpion King and complete this ancient prophecy. The Mummy Returns first hit theaters on May 4, 2001.
In The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Rick continued his adventures, this time uncovering the mysteries of ancient China. This led him to a confrontation with the Dragon Emperor, a historical Chinese military leader played by Jet Li. Unfortunately, Rachel Weisz didn’t reprise her role as Evelyn; instead, Maria Bello took over the part. The film premiered in cinemas on August 1, 2008.
In 2017, Universal Pictures attempted to restart the The Mummy movie series, featuring Tom Cruise as the main character, Nick Morton. However, poor reviews and low ticket sales stopped the film from succeeding, ultimately ruining Universal’s vision for a connected Dark Universe of monster movies.
Why ‘The Mummy 4’ Should Give Brendan Fraser’s Rick a Perfect Ending
The Mummy films are built on a fascinating history and lore, offering plenty of exciting storylines from the Brendan Fraser era that could be developed further in the upcoming fourth movie.
Considering that The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon concluded with Rick and his family happily settled, a follow-up film presenting a new, thrilling challenge that brings them back into action – and feels reminiscent of the first three movies – would be a worthwhile experience.
As a huge fan, I’m really hoping the fourth The Mummy film gives Brendan Fraser’s Rick O’Connell a fantastic send-off. I think the story could really center on him, much like the later Indiana Jones movies put Harrison Ford’s character front and center. We already know from Tomb of the Dragon that Rick’s son, Alex, is a capable archeologist, but this new sequel could introduce a fresh, eager treasure hunter that Rick takes under his wing and mentors. It would be amazing to see that dynamic play out!
Although it’s common for heroes to die in stories, killing off Rick wouldn’t be the best way to finish his story. Instead of a tragic end, the movie could show Rick guiding a new, impulsive explorer. It could also introduce problems within the O’Connell family, ultimately leaving Rick isolated from Evelyn and Alex. This would give Rick’s character more depth, creating a story where he finds new meaning and passion through adventure.
