This weekend promises to be huge for movie theaters. The third Avatar movie is being released, and given the popularity of the first two films, we can anticipate large crowds – many experiencing 3D movies again after a long time.
The latest Benoit Blanc mystery, Wake Up Dead Man, came out this weekend, and I finally got to watch it – though not in a movie theater as I’d hoped. Surprisingly, I discovered that watching a Knives Out movie can actually be a better experience at home than in theaters.
I’m A Big Proponent Of The Theatrical Experience
The original Knives Out was a huge success in cinemas, so it was surprising when Netflix acquired the rights to release the next two films. However, both Glass Onion and the recently released Wake Up Dead Man did have limited runs in theaters.
I still love going to the movies, so I made sure to see Glass Onion on the big screen when it was released. I was hoping for a similar experience to when I saw Knives Out in theaters, and it definitely delivered.
I was really planning on catching Wake Up Dead Man in cinemas, but life just got too hectic! I didn’t have a chance to see it before it hit Netflix last Friday. Even though it was still showing in some theaters when I finally got around to it, it made more sense to just enjoy it from the comfort of my couch with my Netflix subscription.
Watching Wake Up Dead Man On Netflix Allowed Me To Engage With It In A Different Way
Before I started watching Wake Up Dead Man, I mostly worried about being interrupted. My kids were sleeping nearby and can be restless at bedtime, and I often avoid starting a movie at home if I think something might pull me away from it.
Fortunately, the interruptions weren’t disruptive, but I deliberately paused the movie a few times. My wife and I kept getting caught up in the central mystery of Wake Up Dead Man and wanted to discuss our theories.
I had an idea about how the story would unfold, but the movie actually addressed and then proved my theory wrong. My wife had a good guess about who the culprit was, and she was partially right, although she didn’t have all the pieces of the puzzle.
I paused the movie only a few times, and each time just for a short while, but it was really enjoyable to be able to talk about it in a way I wouldn’t have if I’d been at the cinema with my wife. It definitely made watching the movie more special.
Let me be clear: I’m still a huge fan of the movie theater experience, and I don’t buy into the idea that streaming has made them obsolete. I really wanted to see Wake Up Dead Man on the big screen, but I watched it at home instead, worried I’d miss out. Honestly, it wasn’t a better or worse viewing experience, just…different. It offered a unique value that I appreciated, even outside of a theater.
