I’m a big fan of both musical theater and LEGO, so I was thrilled when LEGO started making sets based on *Wicked* and its upcoming sequel, *For Good*. There was a catch, though: the sets for the movie version of *Wicked* are part of the LEGO Friends line, which means the building style and minifigures are a bit different. I was hesitant at first, but honestly, I actually prefer the LEGO Friends sets over the more standard options for *For Good*.
Details about the upcoming movie *Wicked: For Good* are still scarce, but it could be a serious contender for Best Picture. I love collecting merchandise related to the story, so I was excited to purchase the LEGO sets inspired by the first film – Emerald City and Shiz University. However, I was surprised to discover they were actually LEGO Friends sets!
I’ve Gotten Used To The Lego Friends Minifigures
I’ve been a LEGO fan since childhood, and I rediscovered my passion for it as an adult, especially with the amazing Star Wars and Marvel sets. When LEGO announced sets based on the musical *Wicked*, I was really excited. Interestingly, those sets were the first LEGO Friends-style sets I’ve ever bought.
It took some getting used to, but I’ve really come to appreciate these LEGO sets. For the past year, I’ve enjoyed looking at them and especially how well the characters from *Wicked* were captured using these unique LEGO figures, called minidolls.
LEGO recently released more sets based on the musical *Wicked*, especially with the upcoming film *For Good*. I bought the Glinda & Elphaba Visit Munchkinland set to go with my existing collection, but LEGO also created some sets that aren’t part of the Friends line. I also got the Glinda & Elphaba Book Ends, and as you can see in the pictures, these figures have a more traditional LEGO look and aren’t as doll-like as some other sets.
I’m a big fan of Bowen Yang and his podcast, *Las Culturistas*, so I immediately bought this LEGO set, especially because it included a minifigure of his hilarious character, Pfannee. However, after building it and displaying it with my other *Wicked* sets, the standard LEGO minifigures seemed out of place. I’d become accustomed to the LEGO Friends versions of the characters, and I really appreciated how they captured the details of Glinda’s dresses. Have I officially switched my preference?
The LEGO Friends series includes unique sets you won’t find in standard LEGO lines, like those based on Disney Princesses. I initially had reservations about including the musical *Wicked* in this collection, but I now believe it was a good decision for the movie franchise. However, seeing the original LEGO minifigures used to represent characters like Glinda, Elphaba, and Fiyero feels a little odd.
Wicked: For Good will hit theaters on November 21st as part of the 2025 movie release list.
