Following the buzz around the first trailer for The Devil Wears Prada 2, Anne Hathaway is back in another preview, this time for a strikingly different film. The trailer for A24’s Mother Mary, described as a dark and thrilling “psychosexual pop thriller,” has just been released, and it’s being compared to Taylor Swift unexpectedly embracing a gothic aesthetic during her hugely popular Eras Tour.
Anne Hathaway is generating buzz with her upcoming films – she has four projects slated for release in 2026. The first look at her new movie, Mother Mary, is already turning heads, as she appears with blonde hair, a departure from her signature dark style. You can watch the full trailer below.
Knowing A24 is releasing it, Mother Mary is sure to be unsettling in a unique way, and the trailer effectively creates suspense around the strained relationship between Anne Hathaway’s pop star and Michaela Coel’s fashion designer, Sam. Their paths diverged sometime ago when the singer became famous, reaching a point where Sam felt uneasy. The film will likely reveal what caused that discomfort.
The team behind the new film, Mother Mary, has been very secretive about the plot, and the tagline ‘This is not a ghost story’ is a bit puzzling – it doesn’t resemble a ghost story at all. It feels more similar to M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap, which I enjoyed despite some flaws. However, Mother Mary appears to focus more on the intense relationship between the pop star and her designer, rather than external dangers. Unless, of course, you count a character named Sam as one of those threats.

The concert staging looks fantastic and feels as large and impressive as Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. The music also has strong Taylor Swift connections, as it’s co-produced by her frequent collaborator, Jack Antonoff, along with Charli XCX and FKA Twigs. Even if the movie isn’t a success, the soundtrack is sure to be full of great songs.
I’m really excited about the new film because it’s directed by David Lowery, who I’ve been a fan of for a while. He’s done some fantastic work – I loved films like Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, The Green Knight, and even his take on Pete’s Dragon. He also made A Ghost Story a few years back, but I’m pretty sure the marketing for this new one isn’t hinting at that one, is it?
I’ve been seeing another tagline for this movie – “Some Feuds Will Haunt You” – and honestly, that one definitely gives me a spooky vibe! It’s got me wondering what exactly went down between Mary and Sam, and whether the singer can really rely on her old designer. Will they help her out, or is revenge going to be a bigger part of the story than anyone realizes?
This isn’t the heartwarming Christmas film Anne Hathaway had in mind, and her character might actually be the one on the naughty list! Keep an eye out for Mother Mary when it’s released in theaters in April 2026.
