Superhero movies have been consistently popular, though not every attempt has been a success. Many dedicated Marvel fans remember the 2015 Fantastic Four film as a low point – it’s currently available on Disney+. Miles Teller, who played Reed Richards in that movie, recently shared his thoughts on why it didn’t work and who he believes was at fault.
Before Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, the Fantastic Four were kept separate from the MCU. That’s when the 2015 movie came in, featuring a strong cast including Michael B. Jordan and Kate Mara. While appearing on Radio Andy, host Andy Cohen asked Miles Teller if he knew that the movie was bad as he was promoting it. He responded with:
It’s a shame the movie didn’t work out, considering how much effort everyone put into it. It seems like one key person may have been responsible for the issues. There was a lot of pressure, particularly on the younger lead, to take on a superhero role to be seen as a serious actor, and this film was a perfect opportunity. I really thought the cast was fantastic.
Many fans consider Fantastic Four: First Steps to be the best movie featuring the team, but the 2015 version directed by Josh Trank wasn’t nearly as well-received. It performed poorly in theaters, received negative reviews, and even won some Razzie Awards. However, those involved initially believed the film was going to be successful. What caused things to go wrong?
Teller mentioned a key individual who oversaw the final version of the Fantastic Four movie. Although he didn’t say who it was, director Josh Trank has suggested studio meddling altered his original plans. It makes you wonder which studio executive was responsible for the theatrical release we all saw.

You can now stream the entire Fantastic Four collection on Disney+. Disney+ offers a plan with ads for as little as $11.99 per month. For an ad-free experience, it’s $18.99 a month, or you can save 16% by paying $189.99 for a full year. Check out the deal here!
During a conversation with Cohen, Teller playfully blamed the Fantastic Four cast’s appearance on What Happens Live! (available on Peacock) as the beginning of the film’s troubles. He also shared with Andy the specific moment he suspected the superhero movie wasn’t going to be well-received.
I remember after seeing the movie for the first time, I spoke with a studio executive and told them I was worried it wouldn’t do well.
It’s disappointing to hear that Teller, who starred in the recent Fantastic Four movie, wasn’t happy with the final cut. Despite his concerns, he still had to publicly promote the film before it came out, which must have been difficult.
You can now watch The Fantastic Four on Disney+. Plus, First Steps is coming to theaters as part of the 2025 movie lineup. And for Miles Teller fans, his latest film, Eternity, will be in theaters on November 26th.
