“I Think the Wait Will be Worthwhile”: Delayed ‘Star Wars’ Movie Gets Promise to Fans from Star

It’s been just over six years since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker came out, and even though that movie was meant to conclude the Skywalker family’s story, Daisy Ridley is coming back as Rey in a brand new Star Wars film. The project was first revealed in April 2023 at Star Wars Celebration, but it’s faced some changes with different writers and doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet. Still, Ridley is still involved and believes the movie will be worth the time it takes to make it.

While promoting her new movie, We Bury the Dead, Daisy Ridley confirmed her planned film focused on Rey is still in development. She told ComicBook that she’s grown and changed in the six years since The Rise of Skywalker, and believes the story will be fantastic and worth the wait. Ridley remained tight-lipped about specific plot details, but hinted that the film will explore where Rey is in her life when the story begins, much like any new role she takes on.

When Will the Rey Movie Come Out?

Disney

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, known for directing episodes of Ms. Marvel and her award-winning documentaries, will direct the new Star Wars film. The story will likely follow Rey as she tries to create a new Jedi Order about 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. The movie’s script has seen several changes, with Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson initially writing it before leaving the project. Steven Knight, known for Peaky Blinders, was brought in next but also moved on. Currently, George Nolfi, who wrote The Adjustment Bureau, is working on the script.

Disney and Lucasfilm apparently consider Rey to be their most important character in the Star Wars universe. There’s talk that she’ll appear in several future Star Wars projects beyond her own planned movie. Initially, many thought her film might connect to a Star Wars trilogy Simon Kinberg was developing. However, recent information suggests the movie could actually be based on a script called Hunt for Ben Solo that Adam Driver and Steven Soderbergh worked on before Disney canceled it. Because fans strongly requested that The Hunt for Ben Solo be made, elements from that project might now be included in Rey’s upcoming film.

For the past six years, Star Wars has mainly been available on Disney+, but the franchise is returning to movie theaters. The Mandalorian & Grogu will hit the big screen in May 2026, and a new film starring Ryan Gosling, Starfighter, is scheduled for May 2027. Many fans are hoping the next movie will be Rey’s New Jedi Order story, potentially in December 2027 or May 2028. This would be almost ten years since the last Star Wars film, The Rise of Skywalker – and enough time for fans to start feeling nostalgic for the previous sequel trilogy, which recently celebrated its tenth anniversary with the release of The Force Awakens.
