Before diving into The Paper, which premiered on the 2025 TV schedule, I was already acutely aware of the void left by The Office characters in my life. In fact, I drop everything to catch AT&T commercials featuring these familiar faces. However, it wasn’t until I watched The Paper with my Peacock subscription that the depth of my longing for Oscar became apparent.
In simpler terms, Oscar Nunez’s character in “Office” wasn’t always the entertainment hub, but he often provided a balanced and rational perspective. After completing Season 1 of “The Paper”, it seems his character would have been ideally suited for the transition into this new show.
In my latest piece, I mentioned feeling relieved that The Paper didn’t appear to emulate The Office. However, as I delved deeper into the topic, I found myself with a wealth of thoughts regarding Oscar’s role in this comparison. Unfortunately, I soon discovered that I had far more to discuss on this subject than anticipated.
Warning: Contains Plot Details: I’m going to discuss certain plot points and potential spoilers concerning Oscar in Season 1 of The Paper, so if you haven’t had a chance to watch it, make sure to catch up before continuing.
Oscar’s Story Didn’t Seem Finished
The final episode of “The Office” offered satisfying conclusions to many character stories throughout the series, such as Jim and Pam’s family life, Dwight and Angela’s romantic journey, Andy’s career move to Cornell, and various successes for other characters. However, Oscar’s storyline didn’t seem quite as fulfilling in comparison with how it was wrapped up.
As you may remember, Oscar’s partnership with the state senator fell apart just before the documentary was set to be released. Although it might have been for the best in terms of Oscar’s future prospects (he certainly has potential), his most positive outcome was the reconciliation he achieved with Angela. It was heartwarming, but by the end of the series, Oscar’s narrative seemed unresolved, leaving him as an ideal candidate to continue his story in this spinoff.
This version aims to maintain the original’s tone and style while making it more accessible for a wider audience.
I’m quite enthusiastic about potential appearances of other Office characters on The Paper, or even integrating them into the cast. However, I wouldn’t want such introductions to overshadow or contradict the happy endings they achieved in the original series. Given that Oscar’s ending was somewhat open-ended, he’s one of the characters who seems ideal for a spinoff, and his story indeed feels like it has more chapters left to be written.

His Relationship With The Documentary Crew Is Amazing Right From The Start
For me, the initial humorous scene in “The Paper” occurred following the documentary’s assertion that they wouldn’t be able to film Oscar, which was met with a witty retort on screen: a card that plainly read, “We can film you.
Yes we can. There’s no end date on the release Oscar signed in 2005.
Instead of bringing up the debate about why Oscar might agree to make another documentary, it’s simpler and more light-hearted to point out that Oscar seems committed to this venture for the long haul, regardless of his feelings about it.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I mustn’t overlook the fact that the documentary exposed the disastrous downfall of the senator’s affair, leaving Oscar in a precarious position. Given his tumultuous experience, one might think he’d steer clear of another film venture. Yet here we are!
Throughout Season 1, his simmering mistrust and frustration were palpable, but it was the season finale that truly touched me – Oscar expressing his feelings of being watched by the camera crew. I eagerly anticipate delving deeper into this intriguing relationship in future episodes.
It seems to me that the writers might have devised a humorous strategy to convince Oscar to take part in the documentary voluntarily, but perhaps this required more time than was available, given that they were also tasked with launching an entirely new storyline, environment, and set of characters. This leads me to my subsequent observation…

Oscar’s Presence Is The Right Amount Of A Reminder Of The Office (Without Trying To Smother Us With Nostalgia)
I found it both desirable and insightful that Oscar didn’t always take the spotlight in Season 1 of “The Paper” as I did enjoy his presence, but also admired the varied character interactions without him being in every scene.
As a film enthusiast, diving into the first season, I noticed some delightful nods and hidden gems (take a peek at the snapshot above), not to mention the subtle links between Oscar Nunez’s character that cleverly binded this production with “The Office”. However, unlike other shows, it didn’t feel like they were overtly exploiting my fondness for “The Office” as a tactic to win me over to this fresh series. Instead, the narrative felt organic and authentic in its own right.
In simpler terms, Oscar frequently appeared throughout the season and had a significant moment during the finale, but it’s important to remember that other characters also have their own stories worth exploring. As an avid fan of The Office, I’m already familiar with Oscar, and now I’m excited to get acquainted with the new cast of characters.

Now, Can We Please Get Oscar A Love Interest?
In August, I shared my admiration for how romantic interests were subtly introduced in shows like The Office and Parks and Recreation, using examples such as Holly in The Office and Ben on Parks and Rec. I expressed my hope that future series, such as The Paper, would follow suit. Although the show has started a romantic plot between Ned and Mare, I’m excited to see it unfold. However, my true desire is for Oscar to find love. If he isn’t already in a relationship (which wasn’t shown), then there must be a suitable match for him somewhere. I eagerly await the introduction of this character into the storyline.
It’s plausible that the man could be in a committed relationship with his perfect match, whom we, as viewers, haven’t encountered yet. Given his inclination to safeguard privacy, it makes sense for him to keep his personal life away from the documentary team as much as feasible. However, they have successfully navigated around such barriers in the past, so if he does have a partner, their appearance is inevitable. If not, writers, let’s introduce someone new and intriguing!
As a cinephile, tasting the triumph of an Oscar win for his latest role left me yearning for similar success for this enigmatic character. To be honest, I wasn’t always on board with him taking home the coupon book for his “rational consumer” ensemble in the past. But now, I’m pulling hard for him to accumulate even more accolades. I can hardly wait to see who the writers pair him up with next – the potential for an unforgettable romantic arc and captivating storyline is immense. I’ve got full confidence that the creative minds behind this project will select the ideal character and actor to nail the role perfectly.
I figured there was far too much to share about Oscar for it all to fit within a single part of the article, yet I have no remorse about it. My enthusiasm for The Paper is certainly there, but what truly excites me is discovering where this character’s story will lead us.
