Mark Ruffalo is well-known for his role as Bruce Banner/Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in five major films and several smaller appearances. Despite his popularity, he hasn’t yet had his own solo Hulk movie, something fans have been requesting for years – including myself. Recently, Ruffalo was asked about the possibility of leading his own MCU film, and he gave a candid response.
Mark Ruffalo first played Bruce Banner in the 2012 film *The Avengers*, and his portrayal of the anxious and humorous scientist has been widely praised by both fans and critics. Many believe his performance – including his work as the Hulk through motion capture – has led to calls for a solo Hulk movie. When discussing his films with GQ in a YouTube interview, Ruffalo was asked if he’d be interested in starring in one, and he shared his thoughts.
I’d definitely be interested in seeing a standalone Hulk movie. However, it’s a bit complicated because Universal actually owns the rights to the character, not Marvel. I’m not sure if a solo Hulk film will ever happen because of that.
As a huge movie fan, I was really excited to hear the Oscar nominee is still open to playing his character in a Marvel Cinematic Universe film. But honestly, it makes sense that things are complicated. He pointed out that Universal actually *owns* the rights to the Hulk, which means they’d be the ones to make a solo Hulk movie, not Marvel Studios – they just have the rights to produce it. It’s frustrating, but it explains why getting a Hulk-focused project off the ground is so difficult!
Despite the fact that Universal owns the distribution rights to a potential solo Hulk movie, Marvel has reportedly been discussing the possibility internally. Mark Ruffalo hinted at this in a later interview.
We often discuss the possibility of another Hulk movie. Given how many Hulk films there have been, it’s fair to wonder if there’s still a demand. However, I personally would love to make one, and I believe audiences would enjoy it if we could find the right approach.

Mark Ruffalo, known for playing the Hulk, recently shared which other Marvel character he wished he could have portrayed, and fans are really excited about his pick.
Many fans would love to see another movie starring the Hulk. It’s been a while since he had his own film – *The Incredible Hulk* came out in 2008 and starred Edward Norton. For years, there have been whispers about Marvel wanting to make a sequel. Recently, rumors surfaced suggesting they were considering a *World War Hulk* movie, something fans have been requesting for a long time.
It’s looking unlikely that we’ll get a standalone Hulk movie anytime soon, considering the current situation at Marvel. However, there’s good news for Hulk fans: Mark Ruffalo is expected to return as Bruce Banner in the 2026 film *Spider-Man: Brand New Day*, though he hasn’t seen a script yet. While his involvement in *Avengers: Doomsday* and *Secret Wars* hasn’t been confirmed, many expect to see him make an appearance in at least one of those movies.

Disney+ lets you follow the Hulk’s story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with access to all his movies and shows. I’m excited to see Mark Ruffalo reprise his role as Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even if a dedicated Hulk movie doesn’t happen. You can catch him in *Spider-Man: Brand New Day*, coming to theaters on July 31, 2026, and revisit his previous Marvel appearances by streaming them on Disney+.
