I Rewatched How To Train Your Dragon 2, And I’m Not Emotionally Ready For The Live-Action Version After One Scene

With the recent success of the live-action How to Train Your Dragon film, I’m getting excited about the sequel announced earlier this year. To prepare, I rewatched How to Train Your Dragon 2 – which I hadn’t seen in years – and was completely surprised by a key plot twist. It’s made me realize I’ll definitely need tissues when the new live-action movie comes out in 2027, and I want to share what happened!

I Totally Forgot About One Major Death In How To Train Your Dragon 2

I immediately watched the animated How to Train Your Dragon sequel on Peacock after finishing the live-action version. I remembered enjoying it when it first came out, but quickly realized I’d forgotten a lot of the details – it’s been over ten years! I knew the movie involved Hiccup finding his long-lost mother, Valka, who also rescues dragons, but I’d completely forgotten about the plot with the Bewilderbeast.

In the movie, Toothless and the Vikings encounter dragon trappers who are determined to capture all the dragons of Berk. These trappers work for a ruthless warlord named Drago, who intends to build an army by enslaving dragons. Drago controls dragons with a massive, powerful dragon called the Bewilderbeast, which uses hypnotic sounds to control other dragons. This power is used against Toothless, who nearly kills Hiccup with a dangerous blast. Sadly, Hiccup’s father, Stoick, jumps in front of the blast to save his son, making for a truly heartbreaking moment in this family fantasy film.

With a Peacock subscription, starting at $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year, you can watch all of How To Train Your Dragon. You can also upgrade to Peacock Premium or Premium Plus for ad-free viewing and the ability to download shows and movies to watch without internet access. See the deal here.

After Revisiting It, I Expect To Be In Shambles For The Live-Action Sequel

I really enjoyed the live-action How to Train Your Dragon movie, especially the deeper emotional connection between Hiccup and his father. It was great to see Gerard Butler reprise his role, and the actors’ facial expressions really enhanced those important relationship scenes. Having followed Hiccup and Toothless’s story, I’m bracing myself for the heartbreaking moment when Hiccup’s father is accidentally killed by Toothless while he’s trying to protect him. It’s particularly tough because Hiccup and his father had a strained relationship that was just starting to heal.

The emotional impact is heightened because this happens shortly after Hiccup reconnects with Valka. Despite not being fully prepared for it, rewatching the 2014 sequel actually increased my anticipation for the upcoming live-action remake. I’m especially curious if Cate Blanchett will return to her role. The director, Dean Deblois, has mentioned how difficult it will be to bring the story to life in a live-action format, and I think he’s right. The film features exciting dragon races, massive scenes with numerous dragons, and Hiccup soaring through the sky with his new suit – all of which could make for a truly spectacular movie.

Production for the new film is scheduled to begin on November 1, according to recent comments from Mason Thames to The Direct. Having seen the second animated movie, I believe it’s a rare sequel that surpasses the first, which makes me even more excited for the remake, set to release on June 11, 2027, and everything the story has to offer.
