I Love The Simpsons, But I Have Mixed Feelings About This Sequel Movie

In a surprising turn of events, a new *Simpsons* movie is coming to theaters. After years of discussion and a previous attempt that nearly exhausted the creative team, a poster and release date have finally been revealed. As a longtime fan who’s been enjoying the show’s recent return to television, I have somewhat mixed feelings about it.

TopMob liked *The Simpsons Movie* when it first came out, and we weren’t the only ones. A lot of critics and fans really enjoyed it, even more than I did – and that’s saying something, considering I’ve been a huge *Simpsons* fan since I was a kid. Even now, almost twenty years later, I still feel the same way, and I feel like I need to share my thoughts about it.

The Simpsons Is Living On Legacy Alone At This Point

Most fans agree that *The Simpsons* was at its best from Seasons 3 to 9, though opinions vary. While I enjoyed the show for much longer than that, I started losing interest around Season 19, when *The Simpsons Movie* was released. I still watched episodes in 2007, but it wasn’t the same must-see TV experience it had been during my childhood.

After twenty years, I don’t think *The Simpsons* has the same impact it once did. It’s still on TV and you can find some shorts on Disney+, and I’ll always appreciate what it’s done for animation. However, I’ve been focusing most of my time on newer shows like *Rick and Morty*, *King of the Hill*’s comeback, and the upcoming season of *Smiling Friends*. While *The Simpsons* is an animation classic, its latest season just doesn’t stand out to me anymore.

The Simpsons Movie Was Far From The Greatest Thing The Show Ever Did

Although many people loved *The Simpsons Movie*, I was disappointed as a longtime fan. It just didn’t feel like a regular episode. I was expecting the same silly humor, quick jokes, and famous guest appearances that I always enjoyed in the show, but it didn’t deliver.

The movie took some risks and tried to be different from the usual show, with edgier humor and surprisingly emotional moments. While it wasn’t *bad*, it just didn’t capture the feeling of *The Simpsons* as I remember it. Even after multiple viewings and comparing it to newer episodes, it still feels off. I suspect I’m being overly critical, like Comic Book Guy declaring it the worst episode ever.

Why Now? It’s Been Almost 20 Years

It’s hard to say if now is the right time for a *Simpsons* movie sequel, but waiting almost twenty years is a pretty long gap between films. While I doubt the new movie would continue the story from the first one, it still feels a bit surprising. It’s not like fans have been eagerly anticipating this for years, and the creators are just now starting to think about it.

Honestly, what really throws me is that this new movie doesn’t seem connected to any big moment in the show’s history. I always thought if they ever made another film, it would coincide with something important, like the series ending or a major anniversary. A proper holiday special? I could get behind that, they’ve done those on TV a bunch of times. But truthfully, I’m starting to wonder what story they *haven’t* already told. It makes me really curious about why they’re making a movie in the first place.

There Are So Many Other Acclaimed Animated Shows That Don’t Have A Movie

It’s not really a flaw with *The Simpsons* itself, but it does make you wonder why it’s getting a second movie when so many other popular animated shows haven’t. Shows like *Rick and Morty*, *Smiling Friends*, *American Dad!*, and *Family Guy* are all successful, but haven’t gotten the go-ahead for a movie. If *The Simpsons* can get a second film despite its current performance, it begs the question: why not those other shows?

More On The Simpsons

My daughter, who’s nine, recently discovered The Simpsons and is completely hooked! I’m thrilled she’s enjoying it, but also a little concerned about what it all means.

Shows like *South Park* really stay current, and it’s likely to still be incredibly popular in 2025. I think a *South Park* movie would definitely draw an audience. While *The Simpsons* is a classic, I’m not as confident it would have the same impact today.

According to a conversation with Al Jean, both *The Simpsons* and *Bluey* are consistently popular shows on Disney+. *Bluey* is especially hot right now – it’s the most popular kids’ show and even has a movie in the works. So, while I’m not fully grasping it yet, maybe there’s something to this idea of a sequel after all.

Disney+ has been great for letting my daughter watch this series, and she absolutely loves it. If other parents are sharing the show with their kids and they’re enjoying it too, I think a *Simpsons Movie 2* could be really successful. It might even bring a lot of new attention to *The Simpsons* after all these years, which would be fantastic. But for now, we’ll just have to see what happens.

We’ll share more information about *The Simpsons Movie 2* as soon as it’s available, but you can still enjoy all the episodes on Disney+. I’m planning a *Treehouse of Horror* marathon, and it got me wondering – wouldn’t a Halloween theme be perfect for the sequel?
