Ariel Winter is a well-known young actress, even though she doesn’t always live in Los Angeles. Many fans recognize her not just for her on-screen appearances, but also her voice work – she’s been doing voice acting since she was very young, famously as Disney’s Princess Sofia. Her recent animated role was in The Sisters Grimm, which is available to stream on Apple TV+, and she shared with TopMob that she enjoys working on animated projects just as much as live-action ones.
In The Sisters Grimm, the first TV adaptation of Michael Buckley’s popular young adult novels, actress Winter voices Sabrina Grimm, the older sister who learns she and Daphne come from a magical family. The show introduces characters inspired by classic fairy tales. Winter spoke with TopMob before the show premiered, and when asked if she preferred animated or live-action roles, she gave a perfectly balanced answer. Here’s what she said:
I’ve always loved both animation and live-action acting, ever since I started doing them as a child. I began with animation around the age of four, and I really enjoyed it. Then, when I was six, I started doing live-action and loved that just as much. I don’t think my preference has ever changed – I think they’re both wonderful.
At 27, Ariel Winter already has nearly 100 acting credits in movies, TV shows, video games, and other projects. I particularly enjoyed her work in the 2022 horror game The Quarry, where player choices really matter. She began her career with voice roles in shows like Tickle U and films like Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and Bambi II (released between 2005 and 2006, though likely recorded before then). She also made early live-action appearances on One Life to Live, Listen Up, and played a young version of Michelle Monaghan’s character in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
That cast includes a wide range of characters and performance styles, and that’s a key reason Winter is still enthusiastic about the project. She went on to say:
Both live-action and animation offer unique experiences. In live-action, you have a lot of freedom to express yourself through your whole body and presence. Animation is different – it really focuses on your voice as the primary tool for bringing a character to life, which is a fun challenge. I enjoy and value both mediums, even though they’re quite different from each other.
Since the popular show Modern Family ended in 2020, fans have been hoping for a revival or spinoff. Ariel Winter has mostly focused on voice acting for animated series like American Dad, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Phineas and Ferb, with The Sisters Grimm being her first main role since playing Alex Dunphy. In addition to animation, Winter has also been in several independent films, including the 2023 comedy Tripped Up, and upcoming 2025 releases like the drama Like Father Like Son, the dramedy Pools, and the horror film Don’t Log Off.
Considering how long it takes to animate a project after recording, I wondered if Ariel ever found it hard to get enthusiastic again when it was time to promote the finished film. Surprisingly, Winter explained it’s actually harder to calm down her initial excitement, stating:
It’s easy to regain enthusiasm for a project, because the initial excitement never really fades. The difficult part is constantly reminding yourself that it will eventually be released. More than anything, you have to manage your eagerness, because once the work is done, you’re incredibly excited to see the final result! But then you need to remember that good things take time – especially in animation, which is a lengthy process.
You know, it’s true that even live-action movies need a lot of work after filming is done, though it’s usually not quite the same level as animation. But it’s really cool to hear that Winter can just jump right back into ‘go’ mode whenever a new project comes along. She went on to say:
You know, as a critic, it’s actually more challenging to keep my enthusiasm in check than to get hyped up about a film. Honestly, that initial spark of excitement never truly fades when you’re passionate about your work. It’s a constant thrill, and you always hope audiences will eventually get to experience everything you’ve poured your heart into.
Not every show gets a big launch, so it’s great that The Sisters Grimm received so much attention. While we wait to find out if Apple TV will renew the show for a second season, check out an interview I had with co-star Lorraine Newman about the recent changes on Saturday Night Live.
